How did you find this site? and what do you think of it so far?
It takes a while to get used to it, but once you find your niche, it can be addictive

I just chanced upon it yesterday and yes it is very addictive.
I have already spent many hours today.
How long have you been a member?
I find that this page does not refresh automatically

As you can see I am still not fluent with the smileys etc

Theres not much to tell about me, i'm getting old but still young at heart Most of my spare time is taking up with tending my garden and growing more and more plants I'll soon need a bigger garden
What do you do in your spare time?
Tea and a Natter
SD HA Posted Sep 30, 2007
Getting old is a predicament faced by all ..... that goes for me too
but staying young at heart is the key
I am an engineer and have several interests like sports and music. I must admit gardening is a weak point.
Tell me, have you been in the horticultural field all the time?
Tea and a Natter
~:*-Venus-*:~ Posted Sep 30, 2007
What sort on engineering do you do?
I've been in the horticultural field for nearly 7 years. However i've studied plants and nature since i was a child. It's an area where you are always learining. I love it!
My main role is identifying pests and diseases on plants, then recomending a treatment to get rid of them. I'm also responsible for the ordering of seeds and bulbs. Occasionally i get to play outside in the gardens, tending the plants.
Which sports do you play?

SD HA Posted Sep 30, 2007
I am a civil engineer - my main line of work is designing, building and selling apartments. I own a small company doing just that.
You must consider yourself very lucky to be working in a field that's been a childhood interest.
Pest control in horticulture, I know, is very important and complicated as I believe the critters evolve immunities to the chemicals you develop. Are you also in charge of a plant nursery ??
Well, Venus, I have several interests in sports of which badminton I play as a routine - four days a week.
So, before horticulture what were you up to ??
Tea and a Natter
~:*-Venus-*:~ Posted Sep 30, 2007
It's true, bugs and diseases can develop immunities to chemicals, thats why organic control is very important. The use of parasitic wasps to control aphids and other pests, ladybirds and their larva do a great job, also hoverfly and lacewing larva are a good garden friend. People use far too many chemicals in their gardens, which in turn kills bees and butterflies. It can also build up in the soil, which slowly poisons it, making it unsuitable to growing.
The garden centre i work at, does'nt do any growing, we buy all our plants in from other growers. Theres no room and not enough man-power to grow our own.
I've done one or two other jobs, inbetween bringing up my daughter. She's grown up now and has her own children.
I get the feeling you are a bit of a sports fanatic, would i be right?
Tea and a Natter
SD HA Posted Sep 30, 2007
Yes indeed I've always been. Even now as I write I am watching the Rugby World Cup Ireland vs Argentina.
Topping my other interests will ofcourse be music.
I see, organic control minimizes the vicious circle of chemical treatment.
Great to know you have a grown up daughter - who has in turn made you a grandma !!!
I have two kids.
My daughter is just 18 and hopes to complete the A'levels in June '08 she is planning to do medicine.
My son is only 14 and hopes to take after me.
Do you visit your grand-children often ?
Tea and a Natter

Hhmmmm...I'm not too fond of the word 'Grandma' It makes me sound like a little grey haired old lady with a zimmer-frame I much prefer 'Nanny' which is what i am known as by the kids.
I see the 'tribe' (my word for the family) every two weeks, sometimes more during their holidays.
Does you daughter want to be a doctor or surgeon?
Tea and a Natter
SD HA Posted Sep 30, 2007
You are quite right - I shall not mention the word !!!!
I am sure you are not a grey haired old lady - more a tribal queen !!!!
My daughter wishes to do the MBBS (which is the basic degree)and specialize as a paediatrician.
So what else do you get up to? Sports/Games, Reading? - No for a tribal queen, Music & Dancing? - yes for a tribal queen !!!!
Tea and a Natter
~:*-Venus-*:~ Posted Sep 30, 2007
Tribal queen? Heavens no, i'm just an ordinary person
You must be very proud of your daughter.
I don't really get up to much of anything I read, but only plant reference books. I don't do any sports as i get all the exercise i need by walking to and from work every day. I have a wide range of music, which i enjoy when i'm in the mood for it. The rest of any spare time i have is spent sleeping.
What other things do you enjoy aside from sport?
Tea and a Natter
SD HA Posted Sep 30, 2007
No, you must be special !!!!!
Yes, I will be proud once she achieves her goal.
What music do you like and when are you in the mood ?
I enjoy going to my club (not much of a drinker though !!!) chatting with my friends, reading - only at bedtime, wildlife and various other things like dancing etc. Just like to have good fun !!!
