I was just hanging around Facebook for a few minutes and I thought, I haven't heard anything from Chris (one of my oldest friends) for a few months . . .

Last time I saw her in person was in Calgary about fifteen years ago. Her daughter dressed my daughter up in a fairy outfit. With big grins on their faces and the Zulu girl's arms wrapped around the little white girl they made a perfect United Colours of Benetton picture.
What a wonderful person Christina was, and what a terrible loss.
I'm going to go and have a big cry.

Although I'd not heard of her, she sounded like a lovely person and someone who will be missed, both by friends, family and a wealth of others. Sad news indeed.

Wish I hadn't known, hadn't sat having coffee with, hadn't joked about with, hadn't (badly) tutored Anglo-Saxon to, hadn't had family dinner with, anyone on this list . . .
but I did. http://mg.co.za/article/2011-12-23-gone-but-not-forgotten/

She sounds like the sort of person you don't forget, after even a brief acquaintance.
Sorry for your loss.

Well, it was hardly a brief acquaintance, although it was a long time ago. We went to the same high school and were undergrads together. She was always focused and driven, I was always a dilettante, so it was a bit of a surprise when she asked me to tutor her a bit to brush up her Old English so she could meet the requirements of her honours program.
We were part of a bunch who went through English undergrad together. Another one, a good friend of both Chris's and mine is an Egyptologist now (in New Zealand).
