A happy surprise at the bookstore
anhaga Started conversation Dec 14, 2004
So, I goes down to the fine local independent bookseller yesterday with a very nice gift-certificate in one hand and my list of "books to read" in the other. To save time, I don't bother looking on the shelves. I just go straight to the desk and ask the lady to check on whether they have a few books.
"T.H. White. The Book of Merlyn"
clickety click
"No."
"Frans de Waal. My Family Album"
clickety click
"No."
"Adam Ferguson. The History of Civil Society."
clickety click
"No."
"George Manuel. The Fourth World"
clickety click
"No."
"Henry Morgan Lewis. Ancient Society."
clickety click
"No."
"Gee. Don't you have any books in this place?
"Ha ha."
"Carel Van Schaik. Among Orangutans"
clickety click
"No."
"Von Clausewitz?
clickety click
"We did have one copy, but . . . No."
"Geoffrey Regan. Blue on Blue: A History of Friendly Fire."
clickety click
"Yes. We have one copy."
So, now I've got a 80% of a gift certificate from a bookstore that no longer has any of the books I want.
(the happy surprise was that they had even one of the titles I was looking for.)

Can't you use the book voucher in other stores? In Ireland you can use a book voucher in any book shop.

This particular certificate is from this one store. It's not really a problem as I can use it toward special orders. (And it's pretty unlikely that anybody else would have very many of those titles in stock.)

Is this a certain bookstore which shall remain nameless but has the initials "Chapters"?

If it had been Chapters they certainly would have had none of the titles I was looking for, except by accident and filed in the extremely wrong section.
No, in fact, this was Greenwoods: http://www.greenwoods.com/
An Edmonton institution.
