Just spotted you on the "grooving alien" thread & realised you're a "newbie" (not a rude term, just a quick way of referring to someone new to hootoo)

Apart from being the proud owner of the lovely alien in question, I'm also an Ace, which means that I try & help newbies if there's anything they don't quite understand about the wonderful but sometimes confusing world of h2g2. So please feel free to ask me anything, no matter how daft it might seem! I'm not particularly good at the technology aspects, but usually can find someone who is & put you on to them if I don't know myself.

When you say "the little faces", I assume you mean this sort of thing:



To find out what they stand for, hover your mouse on top of the face. Don't click at this stage.

If you DO click on ANY smiley, you'll be taken to the page that has a massive list of all the smileys available for you to use. This can keep you amused for hours! I've printed mine out for reference. Each smiley has a "long code" printed next to it on the chart. To get a smiley; do this:
1) type in <
2) type in the long code name of the smiley you want; ie: cool
3) type in >
Don't put a space between the < and the name or it won't work.
When you've finished writing your message, at the bottom, click on preview to see if the smileys etc. look the way you want it.
If so, post message, if not, delete the smiley & try again (check spelling & spaces)
