Aye, very interesting. I've noticed this even in NZ, how much perception and expression of mental distress has changed over the last few decades, mostly due to the US influence. Also Maori have been talking about this for a long time, the importance of cultural context in responding to people's needs.
The situation with Western psychiatry is so bad now it's almost unbelievable. The upside is that the US has spawned a very strong anti/alternative-psychiatry movement who are doing some amazing things to challenge the conventional approaches.
