For a station that claims to be an all-round music channel it is pretty biased to very select forms of music. I can understand something like MTV2 playing only rock/metal music because that is a rock/metal channel, but the actual MTV channel claims to be a music channel so it should show a variety of different music. Instead, it focus' on contrived hip hop, rap, rock and garage music, that is, when it plays music. Most of the time, MTV tries to become something like the Trouble teen channel showing a mass of non-music related teen-aimed droning shows, meaningless countdowns and phone-ins and moronic video DJs. MTV also seems to prioritise deaths, take the tragedy of the recent Great White show, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone or Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees and compare the little if at all attention from MTV to the deaths of Aaliyah and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez.
MTV is very much a channel that tries to push trends onto people, tries to tell people just what is cool. Some jock video DJ going on about whats hot or not "Hey kids, that music is old now, this is the new music all the cool people, like me, are listening to. Join us!" Theres no loyalty to artists anymore. People followed artists through their careers (and some still do) but recently, with newer artists, now they stop playing an album after a couple of weeks and pick up the latest buzz of the week.
Maybe one day, there will be music channels that'll play all styles of music, from classical to death metal and everything inbetween, new and old videos and just music. Imagine the exposure of artists, think how varied people's music tastes would become, think how people would be a lot more open minded to music and how children would easily be educated in all forms of music. Imagine radio stations (who are also just as guilty) doing the same.
There are so many people around nowadays who have no passion in music because they are not exposed to what they would like. Its sad. I am a firm believer that music is similar to a soul mate, that everybody has music that they will connect with however, they have to find it.
