Just a note to say hi & to ask if your re-installation, & the tracking down of your preferences, worked out ok in the end.

No, I still have dysfunctional software. 3 days into the week and I still haven't heard back from the tech support guy whose daft idea this de-installation was and who failed to send me the attachment to do part of it and the disk of missing files which he promised. Perhaps he is on holiday but I'm very unimpressed with the whole thing. Someone else even suggested I reformat my hard disk and start again with everything from scratch in order to get the older version working again. I really can't face that. I'll hack the registry manually first if there's no response next week (might try phoning too).

Crikey, sounds like a nightmare. We had something similar happen at work recently; just as well things weren't too busy at the time!

Tell me who this tech support is: I'll send the guys round to sort him out. You'll be right as rain in no time.

He finally replied to the email this afternoon - saying they never guaranteed anything would work or not destroy everything else. Typical! However, he did attach something which might turn out to be the missing clean-up program. I've just got to be prepared to go through the whole rigmarole all over again ...

... perhaps tomorrow morning before everything else is loaded up and running.

So are you having to do lots of backups in case things get lost again?

I don't think I've added anything too much since the last backup. I'll think about it again though.

I just spent ages doing it all. It didn't exactly go the way the tech bod's instructions said it would. I ended up doing lots of things by hand just as I expected. I'm sure they don't try/test these things properly themselves. Otherwise they would discover they didn't work. Anyhow, after a certain amount of poking about, it looks like it is working a lot better than before. I'll try and do something useful with it later when I've got some enthusiasm back.
