Relationship Evolutionary Theory (aka - Wanna meet me for lunch?)
Posted Nov 9, 2004
"The history of every major galactic civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry, and Sophistication - othrewise known as the How, Why and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question "How can we eat?", the second by the question "Why do we eat?", and the third by the quetsion "Where shall we have lunch?"." ~D. Adams (Hitchiker's Guide)
I'm all for going to Issac's. Thats aside from the point.
The same could be said for relationships.
Now the immature side of me says to make this into a big sex joke, but I am not going to. For once in my infinately immature life, I am going to be a little more mature about this. I simply took a look at the successful relationships that I know of and see on a regular basis, and boiled it down to this.......
The first phase of a relationship is characterized by the question "How can I get this girl to like me?", the second by asking "Why do I like this girl so much?", and the third by the question "Where has this girl been all my life?".
According to this line of thought, there is a timeline that occurs between the three phases.....in terms of civilization and modern history, we are talking millions of years since we descended from the trees and evolved to eating lunch at Issac's.
In terms of relationships, I have seen the timeline go as long as several years to as short as a few weeks. I have been involved in several relationships that made it to phase two - but I have not yet crossed the threshold into phase three. While I don't want to rush around in a hurry to be a part of "relationship sophistication" - one of my teacher colleagues said it best at Happy Hour yesterday. "Now you know the characteristics you are looking for in a woman....you know what you want physcialy, emotionaly, personality, etc......... As soon as that person shows up, you'll know it very quickly." I love optimism.......even coming from less then sober folks, and when I am the only one at the bar not drinking
