War diaries for Naval vessels?

As I'm sure you know, there are unit "war diaries" for military units, which can be consulted at the National Archives (formerly the PRO) at Kew. Is there an equivalent document for Naval units and what would it be called?
I'm supposed to a WWII Researcher, but I've not done much Naval research yet! I think you probably know much more about Naval topics than I do.
Thanks very much, Lindsay Jackson.

Nearest equivalent is probably the logs - but they tend to be fairly sketchy (basically navigational data). The thing to look for are the "ship's covers" - loads of odd bits get stuck there. National Archives are the likeliest place to find them (but many have either never made it or been "weeded").
Primary data is very much at a premium on this - sill, "Shouldn't have joined if you can't take a joke" as they used to say.
