Partied 'til I dropped %-D (Sat, Dec 25 03)

Went to the bd party of Graham's Spanish friend last night. Had lots of fun but got very drunk 
...so the fun had consequences. 
Had to go home to bed early. Now I've got a hangover, boohoo.

The elevator in the eight-story apartment block where I live seems to be paying homage to 'Hitchiker' at the moment. Remember the elevator that only wanted to go down, not up, and therefore spent its days skulking around the basement? Well, ours seems to have become transfixed with the fourth floor. You're on the ground floor and press the button for, say, the sixth floor, and it always stops on the fourth floor, no matter what. You can imagine the conversation:
I get in the elevator and press the button for the sixth floor.
'The fourth floor is nice, miss,' says the elevator.
'Er, no thanks, I'd like to go to the sixth floor. I live on the sixth floor.'
'Very well.' The elevator begins its ascent. First floor, second, third, fourth...and then suddenly it stops.
'Here we are miss, fourth floor. Will you be getting out then?'
'No, Elevator. I want to get out on the sixth floor. Take me to the sixth floor, please.'
'The fourth floor is nice.'
'Oh, OK, Seeing as it's only two floors up, I'll get out and take the stairs.'
'Have a nice day, miss.'
It's not quite that bad, as while our elevator can never seem to resist stopping on the fourth floor, at least it keeps going to where you want to go (either up or down). However, I did get out and take the stairs today, as after my usual visit to the fourth floor the doors didn't close properly, which rather unnerved me. I guess someone will get round to telling the 'Hausmeister', or warden, sooner or later...in the meantime it provides a mixture of mild irritation and amusement for us all.

Ordering fries in Germany (14 Jan 03)

I've just been browsing thru our much-beloved Guide and came along an Entry for 'chips' - as in fries, not potato chips, if you get what I mean. It made me think once more of the weird encounters I have again and again whenever I order a portion of fries here in Germany (which, seeing as they're one of my favorite foods, happens quite often 
). I go into a take-away or whatever, order my fries and they ask me what I'd like on them. Knowing that they'll have it behind the counter, I always ask if I can have vinegar as well as salt.
'Vinegar?' they ask, looking at me as if I've just escaped from a lunatic asylum.
What I find wierd about this is not so much that they think I'm mad to have vinegar on my fries, since they don't eat them like that here, but more: how can they think *I'm* mad when they put *mayo* on fries? Mayo & fries - eugh!!! 
What's your views on this, folks?

Vacation's over, I'm back in Germany (Tues 14 Jan 03)

Hey
I'm back from England, back in 'Deutschland'. And I must say so far I'm enjoying it more than I did last year. Maybe I've just got a bit more used to things here.
Actually, here's a list of things off the top of my head that I DO like about Germany:
* the public transport - zippy and relatively clean 
* free Internet in one's room
* 'Apfelmus' (apple puree made into a preserve - yummy! 
)
* my friends here
* not having to take any exams - hooray! 
* getting to meet people from lots of different countries
* 'Weihnachtsmarkt' (Christmas market)
* Anglistics classes
* my apartment - probably the nicest place I'll ever live in
* being able to buy cakes, waffles etc (even condoms!) from food & drink vending machines
* cherry juice
* traveling around Germany and Europe
* cost of living is cheaper (as in *much*)
* 'Stollen' and 'Glühwein' at Christmas
* living in a nice area (LS6, it has to be said, is not the best place in the world to live, to put it mildly! 
)
* GERMAN BEER 
(sometimes at 1 euro a bottle - yay!)
* chocolate covered marzipan
* 'KiBa' - a drink made out of cherry and banana juice, an interesting combination
* learning American English
* learning about Kurdish culture thru my friend Laura (whose husband is Kurdish)
* getting to eat Kurdish food at Laura's
* coming back to h2g2! 
Well, that's all I can think of right now. I guess I'd better go to bed.
