I would like to do something before French classes start in September learning to pronounce French words properly as this would build my confidence up.
I had very bad experiences of learning French at school because I had very poor comprehension skills ie having great problems understanding French grammar, I was always behind in my lessons. The tutor did nothing to help me. We did not have any French dictionaries of phrase books. If I was ill and missed classes he would do nothing to help me catch up so I was always left behind while everyone else progresses. This has always put me off from learning French especially in class room situation.

Salut!
I'm probably one of the worst people on earth to help you with your French, since I've lived here for 5yrs & am worse than most tourists!
However, I've lived all over the world & can honestly say that this is the nicest, most friendly country i've ever lived in! Even if you have only a tiny bit of the language, just about everyone will appreciate that you are trying to communicate & help you out as much as poss.
There is a thread on hootoo called "let's parlez Franglais" which is full of people murdering French to a greater or lesser degree; I'll find it & give you a link; it's great fun! There's also a hootoo meet up planned in Paris in the summer, maybe you could try to get to this & we could meet up? Honestly, the best way to learn is to come over here & meet a few friendly French people!
So, hope this helps, keep in touch & let me know what you think.
à bientôt! (basically speak to you soon...I think!)
Terri.

I am afraid because I am on a very low income I won't be be able to afford to come to the Paris meet up as I am on a very low state benefit.
I have tried the franglais thread but it is full of long paragraphs in French which I have to translate and then write my reply in French it can normally take between 30 minutes are an hour just to post one reply. While others it will take only a few minutes.
BTW my surname is Italian and is Basso. I am 3rd generation down on my father's side. I am quite a mixture I am descended from the family Flemmings all they are from Scotland are infact from Beligum. So I am part Flemmish, part Italian (from my father's side) and part English and Scottish from my mother's side.
I have been to France along time ago, yes and they are very friendly. It does not help that I am very shy.
Do you know anyone coming from Essex, I live in Grays in Essex. If we could go together and go halves with the cost?
