A noble motive, Vix. It ain't quite a metal leg. Just a leg brace with a metal hinge, which might well be removed within the week (the brace, not the hinge 
).
I acquired it as a result of a leg that was broken because of a fall during a bit of a scrap with people who were assaulting my front door. The leg was already damaged as a result of a motorbike accident long ago.
I know this raises more questions than it answers. That, however, is life!
