Shari is my half-sister from my father's first marriage. We never knew each other all our lives. It wasn't until 1996 when she contacted our family in Iowa that she even knew I existed. We have met once, back in 1998.
I went my whole life wanting to know her wondering where she was.... Wondering if she is still alive.... I may lose her before I get to see her again.
I got a call from Shari evening. She has breast cancer..... I am heartbroken.

I'm so sorry - try and be brave, there's good medicines and treatment - my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

Saddened to hear that. Tell her to get some Herceptin if she can: it's had promising results here in the UK.

Oh honey, that's so sad.
But try not to worry too much until you find out more about the prognosis (if you don't already know). As others have already said, many women experience complete cures if caught in time and with the proper treatment.
My mother had a breast removed a couple of years ago and she is still going strong at age 76. And this was after refusing chemo. So I think there is plenty of hope that your sister will be fine.
Give me a call on skype later if you want to talk, okay?

it breaks your heart
and it saddens mine.

Thanks folks....
My sister has had a lot of medical problems over the years, and usually has some problem when she calls. She has had a hard life which makes me very, very sad. She has deserved better. Usually when she calls, she is cheerful and laughs about her situation. This time, her call was short and teary.
Her main concern is that she has enough time to get the quilt finished that she has planned for her last grandchild who is due in the New Year.....
I can only hope that her resignation is misplaced and that the biopsies show something different.

I got a call from my sister...
Apparently, they removed all the lumps. The small ones were pre-cancerous and the large one, while cancerous, was removed completely. They will be putting her on some new medication (what, I'm not sure) but the doctor is convinced they got it all.
She said that she had been feeling terrible for about the last six weeks but as soon as they did the biopsies, she started feeling better and that was BEFORE she got the results back.
SOOOOO Good news all 'round!

The other drug worth making a song and dance about is Arimidex, which is apparently better than tamoxifen. My company makes it.
