RELIGION

I can understand the basic human need to acknowledge an omnipotent, omniscient being that makes sense of the mess we see around us. Every society, every culture ever know has some such being though actually all such acknowledgement does is to push understanding back a stage. It is no answer to say "Because God so wills it" because the obvious response is why does he will it!
I have difficulty with the dogmas of major religions though. (I will use christianity as an example because it is the only one I know well). Can we really, for instance, reasonably be expected to accept virgin births or risings from the dead or the performance of miracles or the actual presence of the body and blood of Christ in the eucharist?
Another probem I have had with christian teaching ever since I was old enough to think about it is, just how it benefitted me (or any other individual human or even human beings as a whole) that Christ was crucified. Just how was it for me or us or whatever as I am constantly being told.
I accept that there is a spiritual dimension to life; I accept much of Christs teaching, especialy that relating to consideration and compassion for each other but the other stuff really puzzles me.
Any offers?

Post 11 Sept shouldn't the Americans have stood back and had a good look at themselves to try to discover why someone would want to do something so awful to them?
Do they really have the right to act as the world's moral guru, policeman, prosecutor, defence advisor, jury, judge and executioner?
And do we Brits always have to aid and abet them in everything they do?
