Hello there Dawn and welcome to this, H2G2 - The one and only Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything.
I am an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) and it is my and my fellow ACEs job in this community to welcome newbies - like yourself - to the site and show them the ropes. We'll hold your hands while you find your feet which, awkward though it sounds, is decidedly painless.
If you have any questions with regard to how to work your way around here, or what to do in case of an emergency then please do drop me a line by either replying to this or by going to my homepage ( U130666 ) and leaving a message where it says "Leave a Message" ... we like to keep i simple.
If you'd rather not contact me as you think I'm odd, or can't bear the smell of my breath or just can't be bothered, a list of us (that's to say ACES) can be found here --> Aces
The main thing to remember is whatever you do, enjoy yourself. We're all a friendly bunch who were newbies like yourself once upon a time. If you're lost or want to learn how to do something, or don't understand what the scoobie-doo we're all on about then drop anyone of us a line. We don't bite - unless you happen to made entirely of or - and are all here for the same reason.
Go for a virtual wander, see what people are on about and join in on a conversation, or indeed divulge your knowledge on the mating habits of the pygmy shrew if that happens to be your thing ... but as I said, any questions raise a paw and I'll come running (sort of)
SO there it is, almost undoubtedly unintelligible but I hope the vague intent of this message is conveyed, that's to say, welcome.
We'll hopefully see you around, in the mean time, help yourself to and or even a and do as you will.
Ekki
Incidentally if you want to put sorts in postings etc just click on any of the ones above or here --> <./>Smiley</.> and it'll tell you all you need to know!

Not at all, Dawn, that's what we're here for!
The best thing to do when it comes to writing guide articles is write about something you know a bit about. The best place to start, if you're struggling for ideas, is to contribute to a community entry, advertised on the front page every day ... by doing this you get your name up in lights early on which is always a boost to morale!
There really is no limit to how sensible your posting is ... they can range from the inane ( Egg Banjo's - A776054 ) or hyper-intellectual - see today (8 Oct 02) entry on Gender-free pronouns! ... There's bound to be someone out there who can contribute.
As for the smileys ... if you click here --> <./>Smiley</.> you will be taken to the smiley home page. In simple terms if you type, for example, < smileyname > without any spaces it will show up in the posting ... so for example to do type < followed by the word smiley followed by > all with no spaces and hey presto ... if you like the look of a particular smiley if you hover your mouses arrow over the smiley in question it will tell you what it's called. You just have to remember to put in the < and > and write the name all in lower case. Alternatively you can click on any smiley and you will be taken to the smiley homepage.
Hope this answers your initial questions - any others just shout!

Just an Idea ... you say that you enjoy trampolining ... why don't you try and write an entry on how to do a somersault on a trampoline or something of that sort ... if you need a hand writing it let me know and I'll see what can be done.

Thanks for the great tip. I'll see what I can come up with.
I've figured out the smiley thing. I've seen some sites with actuall pictures on them. How do you get them on.

Glad to be of service!!
With regard to pictures, you can't use them in conversations but only in Guide ML entries ( for help with Guide ML go here<./>GuideML-Clinic</.> ). It takes a bit of getting used to, unless you're familiar with HTML in which case it's fairly self explanatory.
As I said, pictures can only be used in Guide ML entries but to see how to do them and to see a list of those available go here --> <./>GuideML-PictureLibrary</.> ...
Incidentally, if you are writing an entry in GuideML it's worthwhile previewing it before you post. Any mistakes will be pointed out. This is particularly relevant when it comes to smileys whose formatting is a little different. If you're using Plain Text ( Writing-PlainText ) then they are exactly the same as for conversations.
Happy writing and as I said, you know where I am!

Thanks for the advice
I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it now. I just need to find the time to alter my space so that it's how I want it.

Well it seems like you've got to grips with things!! Just stumbled across your article on Trampolining and was going to say something when I noticed you'd updated your homepage too!! You have been busy
Where are you in the North East? I was at Newcastle Uni and have to say that the Toon is one of my all time favourite places! Whenever I catch the train north and look down the river over the Quayside and all the Bridges, for some reason I feel incredibly proud!!

I live in Grimsby, North East Lincs
Since I started sixth form, the only thing that I know for certain I've learnt, is stuff from this site.
I'm spending more time on this site than any other.
What do you study?

Sadly I can't classify myself as a student anymore - left the joys of fulltime education in the dim and distant year of 1998!! Am now a bona fide tax paying member of the gainfully employed ... although I am studying for an exam at the moment but just not full time.
Studied Architecture at Uni and am now in the exciting world of financial sales - why? Good question!
This site is great it has to be said although I don't get on as much as I used to ... work constraints but then such is life - mustn't grumble!

Next year I am going to have to start applying for university and I am terrified about what it will be like and what I will do about money and stuff. It has always put me off uni.
I may apply for the uni that sends me to australia for a year to study chemistry. I've always wanted to go to australia.
What do you think.
