Mark
You will probably have noticed my (repeated) comments that people should always have a go at contacting old shipmates via Navy News. I wonder if, for RN queries, it might actually be worth adding this (and an address - I won't post one on-line) for NN to the "how to research xxxxxx" stuff?

Regards
Ian

Hi Ian

I have noticed your posts actually, and it's something I'm meaning to do for my own research.

Over here, on the WW2 site, you can actually post links to relevant external websites, such as Navy News, so feel free to do that, if you wish.

Cheers, Mark

OK> I'm going to start doing that, but not till I've contacted NN to see who people should contact for associations etc. without web sites or email addresses.

I'm not wildly enamoured of the London Gazette archive - the few postings which give decorations etc. and should therefore be traceable from it don't seem to hold up. Not sure if that's a general problem with the site's search engine, or faulty memories of the posters, but it's still a useful one to have a look at. I think we probably need a "Finding old shipmates" page with these (and others) as the researchers find out which ones are useful - it's no good telling people about ones that don't work.

That's a good idea - of course, anyone could start off threads around the research guides mentioning good external sites, and they could then be added to the list. What do you think?
Perhaps around one of these pages?

We're having a chat about it in the office, maybe we could start a 'web guide'.

The Gazette does seem really hard to use, I actually haven't found it that helpful - although it did turn up one record I was looking for.
