Do you know any good ways of learning the attatchments, innervations and actions of the hyoid muscles. Have exam on Thursday and struggling a bit!

Hi Nessaja. Sorry about the late response - been ill and haven't been able to use a computer. I'm afraid I don't know any good ways of remembering the hyoglossus muscles. I know it's too late, but just in case the attachment is the superior border of greater cornu of hyoid bone, the insertions are the lateral sides of the tongue, the action is that it depresses the tongue and the nerve supply is the hypoglossal nerve. A good book is "Instant Anatomy" by Whitaker and Borley. Whitaker is one of my lecturers and he's damn hot at his subject. Plus, the book's not that expensive (I think around 10-15 quid)
Hope exam went OK. I've got a mock anatomy steeplechase on fri and I've got to start cramming like mad!
Do you enjoy your course? Come back and say hi sometime.

An anatomy steeplechase? That sounds novel! I thought the whole video screen thing that I had on Thursday was unusual. Unfortunately I'm now progressing on to paranasal sinuses and the pharynx/larynx. I hated that last year and now they give us more!
Do I enjoy my course? The early mornings and arguements with trains do not make it all that enjoyable. I survived last year so I've just got to hang on until June when I get patients!

Unfortunately it's not a real steeplechase race with the running and water and stuff. There's a whole bunch of corpses and prosections and we have to go around identifying what structures are, their actions, attachments, insertions etc. Far too much to learn and no time to do it in! I can always make them up I suppose (though I think they might notice that...)

I have a prosection next Friday. Last year I developed a severe aversion to them and walked out of my last one which seems a bit stupid since I managed the first two perfectly ok! Apparently this time we are getting loads of heads to look at! I have a prosection viva next term which could be quite entertaining!
Still i've ironed my dental coat so at least I'll look smart!
I think there should be a dentist smiley - if there can be a medic and a nurse one then I'm sure there can be a dentist one!

You should campaign for one! Failing that you could have a big drill smiley...
I find prosections a bit on the boring side - you don't get to do anything and can't get a real feel for it. Plus, I always have to remember to look for what side the prosection is from. Almost made some glaring mistakes by confusing a left with right leg.
What's the difference between a doctor's coat and a dentist's coat? I'm still convinced that half the job is making yourself look like you know what you're doing!

A dental coat is short has buttons (v annoying especially the cuff ones) or poppers and they go up to the neck thus throttling you and making you look slightly more scary than necessary!

Whoa, sounds a little uncomfortable. It probably won't help many people's fear of the dentist. I've always thaught that the whole white coat thing is a bit intimidating. At the moment though my lab coat is far from white or intimidating - wore it out on a pub crawl and it's now covered in Guinness! Look out for drunken med. students!

It always creeps me out how they may remove most of the top of the head but leave the ears on! Did you hear about that guy who did a dissection in public last night. I don't know what the fuss is about - I cut up a dead person twice a week (now what does that say about me?)

Yeah, I don't know what all the fuss is about. We only get to prosect twice a term at the most so I've not really been able to get used to the whole thing. Have you had your exam yet? How was it?

Dr Nick Posted Nov 21, 2002
It wasn't a proper exam, just a practice thank God! It went alright, though wouldn't want to repeat it! Made an absolute howler on a radiograph tho - cunningly got it the wrong way round and everything was reversed. I don't think I can use that as a defence when I take out the wrong kidney!

Hey!
I've been in exam land again. Still not fun! Yesterday's may have been career endingly bad!

Are exams ever fun? At least it's over now! Sure it's gone fine - you always think you've done worse than you have. I'm now recovering after the end of term. During the term there is a delicate balance of work and drink. Once you hit the end of term the work goes and drinking expands to fill the void. I miss my functioning liver...

Work gone? Wait til you get to the second year! I've got loads to do! 2 essays, anatomy stuff etc!
Hyoid muscles
Dr Nick Posted Dec 16, 2002
Well, the work hasn't really gone, it's now sitting in a guilty little pile in the corner of my room. I've decided this week is anatomy week and I'm going to have to sit down and look at all the pretty pictures showing me what I should know! Second year seems a long way off! What essays do you have to do for dentistry?

So has the work pile gone down? I've kinda done one essay! Emphasis on kinda rather than done tho! Trying to remember how to cook at the mo!

Work still there, if anything finding new pieces of work I had forgotten about. Got a biochem test when I go back so I'm cramming like crazy! I count essays of being kinda done once I've written the title... Hope yours have got a bit further! I couldn't cook before so I don't have that problem!
