Yeah, you should always say things like 'It has been alleged that AD and Psyc are foolish children' that way you can't be done for libel

actually AD you can slash pritty well with a foil.
you wont get a point for it unless you hit them with the point of the sword but it pays to faise the opponant now and again
and psyc I will fence saber at some point
but I am working up my speed and acuricy with the foil for now
oh yeah and footwork too thats kinda important
AD I do beleve that fencing can be and often is faster than judo
the hand and footwork is combined with your skill with the blade...
but boy is it hot under that mask
I tell you what AD I would love to fence againt you some day
its... very theraputic...
preston actually has 2 fencing groups
one in the sports hall.... ?
and one run by the studant union
I'll be glad to kit you up if you need help
that goes for the rest of you to

Ah but Kendo is as equally as fast and Judo was developed to counter it - in fact kendo is perhaps more dangerous because the arms arent extended (hence nothing to grab onto, so nothing to throw).
What I mean by slash is the swing. With katanas and sabres you cut on the swing, rather then the foil which whilst capable is more used to the thrust (sothe scoring system for fencing and the scoring system for kendo are based on two differet principles).
Im not saying that either systems better, but fencing has one major flaw - it cant fight an unarmed opponent of the same skill.
Judo is all about subtle shifts in body mass (I should know I have a lot of mass to shift), slow soft movements that dont give you away until those explosive moments when all hell breaks lose as arms fly everywhere to get grips and counters come into play until the brain cant function (and if your thinking your usually on your back having been thrown). If you want I'll prove the point in preston at the martial arts centre where I know for certain they do Judo - come watch and see for how fast and explosive it gets, I think you'd be surprised especially since most of the guys and girls that do it arent light on there feet.
Ill wait and see as the fencing goes, although I'll definately come at least once. I have my bokken coming tomorrow ready for either Iaido or Kendo in september. I'm still searching for a Kendo club *sigh*, and the armour for thats nearly 500 quid. Doesnt help when the weights going up and down like a yo yo (meaning that any suit isnt likely to fit either way) so cant really afford to do the two (see how much the rental is)

at fencing the stuffs normally free in the club
to get my own kit it will set be back about 300 and thats just for beginers
fencers are fast AD
and one of the easyest wasys to score with the foil is to slash and flick the blade making it bend round and hit your opponant.
beleve me my friend
you've gotta be good on your feet to survive,
and faster than you would think,
actually by the time you've thought
your down five points with no way back

Example: The one judo match I saw for the entire olympics
Great Britain Versus Greece
Brit up 7 points (koka but my memories haysey). With around ten seconds left the greek bursts into action and splats the brit - blink of an eye its over.
A lot of the japanesse styles are like that - short bursts of intense speed whilst having the stamina to retain control.
I have no doubt anth that you could get a point or five on me in a judo versus fencing match up, but you've got to bear in mind that once i've got hold of that arm (or have control of it), your as good as splatted. Seriously go investigate and see. All it takes is that one moment of frustration to over extend that arm...
I'll go have a looks for some judo clips on the net. You seriously dont see the hands moving to through before its too late (plus if a fencer has no arm, they cant fence. If a judoka gets a hole through there arm, they use the other)

if it was sword fencing then you'd quickly be loosing a lot of blood before you got that hold of my arm...
if you could,
a sword could cut through the tendons in your arms and legs with ease
and then you couldnt move.
but ask yourself,
what would happen if i aim for the sholders.... neck, head
which is quite common for a fencer to do
lets remember AD that fencing is basically training for sword combat
you want to try your judo skills against me with a sharp sword I'm all game
give me a live blade and I'll show you what I'm worth,

You'd be foolish to aim for the sword or neck against a judoka because most of the stronger throws (Ippon Seoi Nage, Morote Seoi Nagi) involve coming under the arm - you extend that arm high and up, and it's childs play to slip under neath.
You've also got to remember that me as the unarmed assailent knows that if that sword touchs them then there dead, so the best way to stay alive is get the sword out of the way. I'd lose a limb and take cuts if it kept me alive long enough to make the kill.
You'll sometimes see Judoka with there arms just below there face, hands open, hunched over slightly. They then lash out with there hands to grab a sleve or a collar. They fight like this because its better defensively, but really theres reason to use it against any other opponent. A judoka can get just as much speed standing spread out as he can from hunched, a fencer from what I know fights side on.
Exactly training for sword combat - not against an unarmed opponent, my original point. You as a fencer, wont learn to naturally defend yourself against an unarmed opponent because you assume you have the advantage in being armed.
What I'm trying to point out is at a distance you no doubt have the advantage due to the superior reach the weapon affords you, and granted on the defence you'd win hands down, but on the attack you extend the weapon, or there'll be the temptation to extend it too far, or you'll get frustrated, then splat.
The Japanesse Judoka are famous for never submitting - to the point where they will pass out on the mat rather then submit. The full force of the arm locks and strangles can come on within a second or two - if you dont submit, you pass out/lose a limb, its that simple.
If you think a few cuts would bother a Judoka, your mistaken, and I'd be more then happy to put said theories into practice come september - I'm sure the students union will have a judo club. Pair it up with the fencing club for the experiment and away we go.

TB - you think I wanna hang around while you look for somebody to hit at with a sword?Anthea's the crazy sister at the Academy, not me.(Or was, since Anoon's dead...)
Anth,AD,it's great to see you have a friendly argument that's not over someone's paranoia but based on real fact,a true battle. But maybe you're going into it a bit much, hmm? It's unlikely any of the things you're both describing will happen to you in everyday life.Yes,martial arts are fun - I used to take karate, got to red belt one black tag.Often wish I hadn't given it up,but I'm too embarrassed to go back, especially since I'll have to start at white belt again and I'm nearly 16 - and I imagine fencing is fun too.I wouldn't mind trying it myself. But Anth, you're not Anita Blake and AD,you're not James Bond.So unless you do take up careers as vampire executioners and international spies(and Anthea,if Kham ever turns into one of Anita's six boys, start screaming and running far,*/far/* away...)
But keep going,it's really fun.
Did I say good luck before?*frowns*Well, good luck,Anth.I'm sure you're doing great.
