I asked Zhou, the Chinese post-doc:
Money: Transcribes Qian or Tsian (pronounces Tshen). The hieroglyph used is composed of two smaller hieroglyphs, meaning Metal on a thread/rope. The old chinese coins had a square hole in the middle which was used to store them on a thread or rope. Obvious.
The currency Yuan is composed of 100 fen(s). According to his description yuang means '100 fens' and fen means 'one hundredth yuang' - which I think is an incredibly redundant description. (I'll have to ask him again later)
The hieroglyphs for numbers are different when used inconnection with money. Money numbers are different from ordinary numbers and are different from cardinal numbers. They have no apparent connection to each other.

PS: The Bulgarian guys I will ask Monday since they are all away.
