I've read the PR threadbut am not going to refresh it, for reasons I won't go into here (but I think you can guess); suffice to say there is nothing there that I am going to action.

I usually post to say I've read it, changing the title to "Sub-ed calling" or such.
You don't? I also have issues with a certain person objecting then withdrawing objections.

Ah, well I don't much keep up with the intrigues of our researching class anymore I certainly don't mind your not resurrecting that thread, whatever your motives.
I like to be challenged on my entries though. It's the way PR should function, even if I disagree with the basis of the challenges. It makes you want to write entries that will stand up the strictest scrutiny. Maybe that's why I'm so unfailingly stubborn in PR.

Oh well - it was <> which stood out for me, I assumed you were of the same attitude as myself, but no matter. I presume you also defend to the death his right to voice his objections
With me, if something is said wrongly, an apology is in order.

<< and has several large and well equipped aeroplanes (called Air Force One) at his personal disposal. >>
There's more than one? Are they all called "Air Force One"?

J Posted Jun 27, 2008
The first change is fine.
There is more than one airplane that the President uses. Actually, any plane that the President rides on is given the name 'Air Force One' temporarily by ground control. So, even if he boarded someone's tiny two seater aircraft for fun, that plane would be called 'Air Force One' for however long he was in it. The planes that the President has at his disposal don't have any particular names, I believe, other than 'Air Force One', which they are popularly referred to as. I don't think that needs to be explained fully, though. It's just interesting to me.

That's interesting to me as well, because I didn't know that. I just wanted to check they weren't Air Force One mark II or something similar, but I understand that he can only ever be on one plane at a time, therefore that's "Air Force One".
I'd like to tweak what you've said just a little:
<>
to
and has several large and well equipped aeroplanes (all called Air Force One) at his personal disposal.
which is perfectly adequate.

I've really struggled finding the definition of "trifecta" - all I can find is "A system of betting in which the bettor must pick the first three winners in the correct sequence" so it doesn't quite fit. Mind if I change it to "A trio of Republican..."?

J Posted Jun 29, 2008
Really? A quick typing in my dictionary widget on my computer turns up 'a run of three'. A trio is not an ideal word choice, because it doesn't have the same sequential connotations (a trio of 3 Republican Presidents might be 3 at once, but a trifecta would be 3 different ones in a row). At least that's how I understand it.

Fair enough, but these articles are supposed to be understandable to the layman, (the word is not even in my British English dictionary, and came up as a spelling error in my spell-check) so I'll have to footnote the definition of "trifecta"- is "Three different ones in a row." alright?

J Posted Jun 29, 2008
Yeah, I try to avoid using definition footnotes whenever possible. I find them annoying as a reader. Why don't we just replace 'trifecta of' with 'a succession of three'? I'm not out to broaden anyone's vocabulary after all (but I really didn't realize that word is not in common use over there. Hell, it might not be in common use over here either. It's hard to tell)

I like words beginning with "tri" meaning three, myself, keeps the old Greek root going.
How about: "A triad of Republican presidents followed..."

...or even: "A triumvirate..."

'a succession of three' then? I have Opti's Floella Benjamin to be getting on with, and I'd really like to return this if you're happy with my subbing
