Fall (the readiness is all)
waiting4atickle Started conversation Oct 15, 2008
I was reminded today, as I watched the back lawn disappear under a carpet of leaves (from next door's bloody sycamore) of a rather peculiar lyric which I wrote a few decades ago. I suppose it has lodged in my memory on account of being so awful, but what the hell! It's a link of sorts to my college days. (And that reminds me of the Tom Lehrer song, Bright College Days - Oh, soon we'll be out amid the cold world's strife. Soon we'll be sliding down the razor blade of life. )
I caught a leaf by accident
One windy autumn day;
I took it for a sign that I
Would soon be on my way.
I mused upon this strange event,
Not knowing what to say,
For until then resigned was I
That I would have to stay.
It's strange the way that Nature seems
to order all our lives,
As if it were in her sole power
To choose whoever thrives.
She speaks to us through signs and dreams
Without our knowing why,
And she alone decides the hour
Wherein we are to die.
