If you're interested in the power of stories, please allow me to recommend "The Science of Discworld II: The Globe" to you. You don't need to be a big fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld to appreciate it - the science bits by Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen are at least as interesting, and one of the central theses of the book is that we as a species are shaped by our dependence on telling and hearing stories. In fact the book suggests that we are not really Homo Sapiens at all, we're Pan Narrans, the storytelling chimpanzee. Homo Sapiens would be, to paraphrase Ghandi, "a good idea".
(Welcome to h2g2, btw. Hope you like it...)
