Help with Welsh English

Hi Noggin. It isn't for me but for a teacher in Spain who wrote to Questions, Questions thus:

" english in wales peanutz cacahuete - 1st post - 24 Mar 2003 20:47

I have a question and didn't know where to post it (Oh, and I have never done this before) so here goes: I'm an English teacher in Spain (or , at least I try!)and one of my pupils may be going to Cardiff soon for a couple of months Basically I wanted to tell him what to look out for not just accentwise but also in structures. ie. what is "different" about how the welsh speak.(as opposed to southern english for example) I mean, I know how they speak, and I can usually spot a particular accent pretty quickly but I would like to be able to explain the peculiarities of welsh english without trying to imitate, like Scotty."

Do you have any suggestions or would Alji, Math etc be likely to know more? You're my first port of call because of your location and breadth of knowledge.

Cheers, Toxx.

Difficult one, Toxx. Although I'm living in Wales I'm actually southern English, but to be honest I haven't really noticed any outstanding consistent differences. Cardiff isn't particularly Welsh, though, not like North Wales and some of the rural areas, and I wouldn't have thought there'd be that much of a problem. Alji might be able to help, but I suspect Math is too far to the Northwest of Wales to be of much help with Cardiff local, though I could be wrong.

Thanks Noggin. As you see, it is the contrast with Southern English which is required and more likely to be observed by those such as ourselves. Others have send Peanutz over to the 'Word of Mouth' message board which I wish I'd thought of. That should do the trick.

Thanks again, Toxx. smiley - smiley
