Gosh. K and I put some clear caulk around the window frames a couple summers ago and haven't needed to use the panty-liner method since. I'd forgotten all about it!

I'm so relieved that days like that will be a thing of the past, now. This guy who owns the new place is apparently a real high roller in real estate in Chicago. That would indicate to me that he's someone who has money available to fix things when necessary- possibly even things which are not necessities but are provided with the unit, like dishwasher, air conditioning, etc. The courtyard seems reasonably well-maintained and common areas seemed clean, which is a lot more than I can say about here. smiley - winkeye

I've tentatively reserved a moving truck and four men for August 4th, and gotten an estimate for the cost (which is a bit more than I was expecting but surely beats hauling the stuff ourselves in hot weather). Tomorrow we go sign the lease and then I can schedule utility transfers and notify USPS to forward the mail.

Everyone keep appendages crossed it won't rain that day...

minichessemouse - Ahoy there me barnacle!

Crikey, looks like you will move before I do!

Still got most of the carpets to lay in our new place. and some painting to finish up (remind me to never ever paint anything wooden in Gloss paint, EVER)

we need to be outta here by August 19th.

Enjoy your move. Think most of mine will be done with the assistance of my dad and a Transit van.

Having moved ourselves into this house, I'm determined we will have a proper removal firm if we manage to sell this and move into the bungalow.

Too stressful otherwise smiley - wah

There's no way we can handle five rooms of furniture, all the dishes and small appliances, and all those books and DVDs and records, on our own. We're too old to ask friends to help- last time I tried that, 10+ years ago, no one showed up. smiley - winkeye And if we pay professionals, they will wrap the furniture with those blanket things and they will shrink wrap some stuff. I'm not as skinny as I used to be, and hauling all this stuff up and down stairs would take days...

The estimate is for six hours, four men and a 20' truck- $940. If it takes longer, it will cost more. If it takes less time, we pay less. The minimum is four hours and I expect we'll definitely take longer than that.

This weekend, I will suggest to K we begin with the back porch we use as a storage area. We can sort out stuff to get rid of, put the rest back into the storage bins, and then we can use that area for storing everything we want to have picked up for donation. That way nothing we mean to keep winds up donated, which is what happened to a fair amount of my clothing when I moved in here. smiley - erm

I hope you get a landlord like ours. He's out there personally damp-proofing the wall right now, and we tend to invite him to parties. smiley - weird

He seemed nice enough- and the building appeared to be well-maintained. Someone keeps it up, anyway.

We've started packing by digging through my storage bins of childhood stuff and figuring out what I can bear to part with. We've got a large pile of bags of stuff to donate to charity. We also have filled two recycling bins and two dumpsters with crap that piled up out back that we were too lazy to deal with. I am hopeful that once we clear that off, we can maybe use the back area for placing bins and boxes that don't need a climate-controlled environment (i.e. no VHS tapes, records or candles smiley - winkeye) so we have room to work.

We plan to pack a little every night, starting with out-of-season clothes and coats, books and VHS tapes, since we don't need to use those in the next two weeks. I think boxing stuff up will be quicker and easier than sorting through stuff and hauling it out to the alley was yesterday- mainly because it's not as hot and humid inside as out back.

I'm feeling really anxious- not least because there is stuff everywhere and I am one of those people who is physically uncomfortable when things are not in their rightful place. Three weeks of things not even having a rightful place might drive me a little batty. smiley - laugh

TRiG (Ireland) A dog, so bade in office

I moved house twice recently. I moved into my parents' house to look after it when they went to China for six months, and I moved back out when they came back. Both times I did most of it myself. My parents brought my computer in the car, and when I was moving to their house they also brought a lot of the books. But mainly it was me walking up and down through town with a rucksack on my back.

It does help that I wasn't carrying any furniture.

Hi TRiG, nice of you to stop by. smiley - smiley

No way could we fit all of the books and the record / CD collection into a rucksack. We'll be lucky if the moving truck only needs to take one trip...

A nice estimator from the moving company is coming Thursday evening for an inventory. We'll get a more accurate estimate then, so I know how much money to withdraw.

I haven't been sleeping well at all, it's so hot in here and all that. Fingers crossed it keeps going smoothly.

I can't wait to use my shiny new oven and washer/dryer. The new place has all brand new, stainless steel appliances.

That sounds great, if it wasn't for the moving bit, but that's probably a small price to pay for such better accommodation. smiley - smiley

I'll survive it, and it will be worth it in the end. It's just not much fun in the meantime. smiley - winkeye

The cats love the obstacle course of empty boxes, though.

I enjoy moving. I've only been here since December and am already rearranging furniture. smiley - silly

I don't mind rearranging stuff. Packing it up and having it hauled across town, not so much. smiley - winkeye

I'll be interested to see what the revised estimate looks like after the estimator comes and does the inventory... the initial quote was just under $1,000 (four men, six hours, one trip in the truck). I'm concerned we may need to make more than one trip as I don't think they could navigate anything bigger than a 20' truck into the alley at the new place, as it ends in a cul-de-sac and they will have to either back all the way in, or all the way out.

And I forgot when getting the initial estimate that we have two full drums sets in the computer room because one of K's bandmates decided he didn't like the other musicians who practice at the facility where their practice space was, so they quit renting it and moved out end of June. Talk about lousy timing...

I'm so tired of packing already. And we're having to donate a LOT of stuff. I guess I really don't *need* five teapots... smiley - erm
