h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Something appears to be wrong with my cable internet connection. I called the cable company, and there's no signal getting to or coming from the modem.

I was mucking around with a recycling bin alongside the building yesterday and wonder if I knocked something loose. Odds are good the modem didn't just up and die while we were at work, and I was online from home before leaving for work yesterday morning just fine. The other possible issues that tech support mentioned were that the cat may have pulled the ethernet connection- I'll have to check that when I get home. There have been no outages in our area lately, so who knows what random thing has caused this.

I guess I will also power cycle the modem and router again, this time leaving everything disconnected for a few minutes, just in case.

Anyone with other suggestions- like do I need to run "ipconfig/reset" or anything?- feel free to comment. It's a Motorola Surfboard modem, going on 7 years old, and I have a Linksys router. Nothing wireless.

In the meantime, I have scheduled a visit from a technician tomorrow afternoon. They'll only charge us if they find a cable unplugged *inside* the house or find the modem was damaged (the second scenario is highly unlikely as it was offline when I got home from work but fine before we left). Obviously, once I leave work today, I won't have internet access until the tech fixes the problem, or, if they're not able to fix whatever's wrong tomorrow, until Monday morning when I return to work.

Not that I spend a lot of time on hootoo from home these days, but neither will I have access to email, facebook, Lexulous, etc. I just wanted to let everyone know that I am not ignoring any urgent messages, ongoing discussions or games or what have you. I've got plenty of other projects and amusements to occupy me tomorrow, and we're having dinner at my grandma's tomorrow evening anyway.

could be a dozen different things, best let the company sort it out I reckon once you've tried all the obvious.

I hope to. The only down side is that my uncle is making lasagna, which I won't be able to eat... but there will be plenty of salad and garlic bread to stuff myself with.

It's so aggravating when this happens (it's not the first time the cable has gone out, it happens a couple times a year), especially as I have a ton of work I wanted to bring home to knock out on Sunday morning, rather than coming in early/ working through lunch every day next week. Sigh.

It's so annoying when such things happen. Hope it will be sorted soon.
