sorry! I forgot the most vital thing. we use Atora vegetarian suet.
No idea how it's made though.

I was in fact able to locate a domestic distributor of that veggie suet, and just ordered a bit. Thanks, Sho, it will come in handy in more than just this recipe!
They also had Jelly Babies, which we've never had but hold a certain appeal , so I've ordered some of those at the same time.

Veggie suet came, and it's different from the veggie shortening I normally use. It appears to have less fat as well, which is a good thing. Now I just need to try it, and the weather's cool enough for baking, too.
Still undecided as to what to bring for the pot luck. The chocolate brains at the online shop dragonqueen linked me to are out of stock (just my luck), so I may go looking for a brain-shaped mold and make some veggie-Jello in it. Otherwise a number of people have mentioned they wouldn't mind if I brought tamales anyway.
