Countdown to Peru - 2 days to go

I really shouldn't be sat here writing this - I have far too much to do to get ready. I now have an impressively small sleeping bag that just sits there all cute in the bottom of my rucksack instead of looming menacingly like it's predecessor. This means I will be able to take some luxuries such as walking boots and knickers. And the occasional vegan snack just in case (as I suspect may be the case) the trek company really haven't got a clue what being vegan entails. Now all I need to do is to assemble all these items (along with a collection of drugs that would keep a small hospital going for a few months - well it would if they only had patients suffering from dysentery and inflamed knees) in one place.

Countdown to Peru - 1 week to go

People keep asking me if I'm getting excited about the Trek. I think I've got past excited and onto apprehensive now. I really can't believe I only have a week to go. I have so much to organise. Don't really know where to start.........

Countdown to Peru

Just under 3 weeks to go!
Fitness level = 8/10
Climbed Snowdon yesterday and rather pleased that I didn't get out of breath at all. There is hope for me yet then. Also - very relieved that my boots were really comfortable - after 2 pairs that did my feet in (in a variety of ways) it is so good to be able to walk and not be in pain!

It can't be August aready!!

I can't believe it is August already. Way back in January, some strange urge (probably prompted by the fact that I was due to be 40 this year) led me to apply to take part in a charity trek to Machu Picchu in Peru. The Trek doesn't actually take place until October and, back then in January that seemed so far off - plenty of time to raise the necessary funds I need to take part and to get fit enough to be able to do it. The walking isn't exactly over any vast distance - a grand total of 33 km over 5 days (sounds easy) - but it is all at altitude (from 2000 - 4200m) and a lot of it is up large steps - which, for someone of limited leg-length such as myself, may pose a bit of a challenge. In preparation for this I joined a gym and have spent many happy(?) hours on the tread-mill walking on an incline and on the stepper machines trying to get my knees used to more action than they have seen in years. But progress is slow. Progress with the fundraising is going a little better - I have raised £1700 out of the £2000 I need (by 23rd of this month - hence the disbelief that August is already upon us). Oh well, I still have 12 weeks in which to attempt to get fit!
