Hi superdogmonkey, you seem like the ideal person to answer my question smiley - smiley

I'm a bit skint at the moment, but when I get some money which MC 5 album should I get? Please bear in mind that I've never heard them before, but have a lot of very good things about that smiley - cheers

Hi, Rocketman. Did you ever get your fanzine going?

The MC5 album to get is the 1st one - "Kick Out the Jams". Recorded live in 1969 (supporting Chuck Berry!) this is a powerful document of a band firing on all cylinders. The set on this album is a mixture of bellowed vocals, huge twin fuzz guitars and psychedelic freak outs!smiley - cheers

Warning .......... the first track is sung in a high voice for some reason... don't let this put you off! This and the Stooges output really started (in my opinion) the first stirrings of punk attitude ...tunes and excitment + social comments over musicianship.

Hope this has helped.

How is your search for a band going?

Hmm, my search for a band isn't go too well. Not many people like the same music as me so finding other musicians is quite hard. I don't have a few friends who I plan to have a band with, but we're all too over worked with school to actually get round to having a practice smiley - erm

The fanzine's going pretty well actually. I decided that I didn't have enough to time to do the whole thing on my own, so I'm putting one together with a few friends. At the moment I'm just writing some material for possible inclusion. There are some really awful zines out there, so I'm actually going to put effort into mine.

I'll definitely get 'Kick Out the Jams' when I have some money, it sounds like an essential album. I was at a (punk) gig the other day when the singer of one of the bands said: "This next is dedicated to the MC5, punk f****n' rock from 1969" smiley - ok

Cheers for the info smiley - smiley

I'm having the same problems getting a band going again but as I'm an old git, time restraints are from work and a baby!

Due to rehearsing only now and then, we can't find a bass or guitarist to fit into out timescale,so me and the drummer are gonna work out the songs as a two piece and get around to lack of band members by playing really, really loud!! and shoving my guitar through an octaver to kind of put a bass sound in!

Ooh, the zine's really taken off over the last few days. We've been emailing local bands today asking them if they'd like an interview, and have even got a response smiley - smiley

Don't suppose you know any UK punk bands that would like an interview/review?

Sorry, all the unsigned punk bands in london that i knew seem to have split up! smiley - cry
Let me know if it's possible to get a copy of your 'zine when it's finished ... I would really like a look!

I see that you *kind of* like The Ramones. have you ever been tempted to track down the songs they covered on "Acid Eaters"? Most the originals come from the MC5/Stooge noisey type stuff!

Ah yes, Acid `Eaters. That's the one pressed on crazy multi-coloured vinyl isn't it? I think I saw a copy of it in a local record shop a few weeks/months ago, I didn't buy it though smiley - sadface

I'll keep a look out for it!

Sorry to be but I was snooping around and seeing this conversation I wanted throw in my 2ps worth.

Finally, someone else who acknoledges the start of punk. Iggy and MC5 were the first to really portray that attitude that so defines punk. "I wanna be your dog" not only the finest 7" of all time but also the the first punk record.....IMHO......

Also picked up 'Damaged' by Black Flag and The Unseen's complete 1994-2000 singles collection on vinyl last week smiley - biggrin

I set up the h2g2 punk page last night, at about 1am. Now I just need to find some punks that want to post there smiley - smiley

'Damaged' is currently the only Black Flag record that I own, I really must get some more as they're a great band. I don't know why it took me this long to get some of their stuff for myself, as I've known them for quite a while now.

Today I'm planning to spend some of my time looking for 7"s to order off the internet. My friend and I plan to sell them to our friends, after taking a copy for ourselves as royalties smiley - smiley
