according to http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F47997?thread=6190601&skip=1 the sub editor never edited gthis article yet in comin up it appears as a pending article. Is this a flaw in the editing process? Should it have returned to the status of "not yet sent to a sub-editor?"

Hello Shagbark,
Many apologies about the delay on this one. It was indeed returned again, and then we put it aside to take a proper look at it. Unfortunately, due to the way our editorial tools are set up, it wasn't as visible as it might have been, so I am very sorry we haven't sorted it out before now.
It's very busy here today (we're not back at full strength yet!) but we will have a look at this very shortly.

It looks good except most atlases list North and South America as two distinct continents so the first sentence woulod be better written with plural not singular tense:
'after whom the American continents were named.'
