It was suggested that I ask you this policy question. I am entering the Loebner contest of artificial intelligence this year. I wanted to use some of the entried in the "English Slang" section on h2g2 in my program. The top prize of the contest would be $2000.00, so I know I need to ask permission for this. I would use the items in a synonym fashion.
If you could drop a line in my Journal that would be helpful. If permission cannot be given I just will not use the info. Thanks.

Hello there Peter,
Thank you for your query. I'll get back to you with the proper answer on this one, but first of all I should find out more details. Do you want to quote the Entry or use it in full?
Thanks,
Natalie

Hello again Peter,
I'll be posting this in two places so you don't miss it.
I'm still not clear on how you want to use this Entry, but here are the basics. There's no problem with using h2g2 stuff, provided you quote the source (i.e. h2g2!) and don't reproduce the whole document or a substantial part of it, but take quotes instead. If you did require permission to use more than this then since the document is not copyright of one particular person then permission would need to be obtained from us.
I hope this helps, but please do not hesitate to drop by my Personal Space if you have any further questions.
Thanks very much,
Natalie
