Eid in Dhaka
Professor Zylatburger Started conversation Feb 21, 2002
I am here in Bangladesh on the eve of the Eid festival. This is a festival of sacrifice where the papers, etc are all full of articles called things like 'The joy of sacrifice'. I guess it's easy to experience the 'joy' if you're not the one being sacrificed.
The city is currently full of cattle, goats and even the occasional camel (yes, I have seen a camel here), all waiting to be ritually slaughtered for Allah (the Merciful). This is one of those things about Islam that I don't understand. Don't get me wrong, I spend a lot of time in Muslim countries and working with Muslims, and I have a healthy repect for many of the traditions and cultural norms of that tradition. I just think that the spectacle of rich people buying the best cattle to show how wealthy they are and then slaughtering them is a waste in a country where the poor are short of food.
