Saturnine, I have always had the best response when I describe a computeras a big library where you have to work at a desk and the books are fetched by a fellow on an electric scooter. The scooter's speed is the speed of the computer, the basket he carries things in is the RAM so the bigger the more efficient. The size of the whole library is the size of the harddrive so naturally bigger holds more. The size of the desk you work on is also the RAM size (I haven't worked out a better analogy yet)

It's just the whole...
thing that I get confused about. You should have seen me when I first started on this site! I was all over the place. I have to work things out by eye and hand, and once that is done, I am fine.

Well you have typing skills which is the best thing to start with. I don't know if the two of you know what this might mean. If you can get Net access you will have a whole new world open up. Opportunities will be limitless. I'm quite excited for you!

that's a good one; the analagy I usually use when I'm explaining computer innards is someone working in a small room stacking boxes which are brought from another, larger, warehouse. ..you can tell what temporary jobs I've done..

About an 8 hour drive. I go by my sister's since she is a little more than that and a little farther. Easier to drive on the US side since there is a better freeway.
