Hi, i too live in Brissle, and am a metaller.
Does the name Wai-Gong ring any bells?
And I have to disagree about your statement about music with a soul, Eminem is not music, it is musical entertainment, and its not even very good.
Anyway, apart from that, ...

Saturnine Posted Sep 8, 2002
BRISTOL. Are you really from Bristol? I think not.
Eminem is art. Not specifically music, but poetry set to a beat. Which is what I perceive the whole rap scene is about. I relate to it. So sue me. I wouldn't risk my rep. if it wasn't THAT good.

BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 9, 2002
You think that I am not from Bristol???
Shall I talk of the delights of the Bierkeller,
or the little s**ts who congregate on college green...
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 15, 2002
AH! The Bierkellar is not delightful!
*laughs most heartily*
Ok I believe you. Where abouts do you reside? North? South? Or on a barge at the docks?
Pfft.
BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 17, 2002
Im from South, I live in Knowle, and no im not a scaggy Kno-wester.
*Hopes he hasnt insulted a scaggy Kno-wester*
Talking of the Bierkeller, the floors have been sticky there for approx 20 years, no joke. My mid-thirties older brother told me they were in his day!!
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 17, 2002
You're walking a dangerous path being *different* in one of the white trash capitals of the world, aren't you?
I may have been born to white trash, but I outgrew my heritage a long time ago. I've lived in Withywood, Shirehampton, Eastville, Bedminster, and I currently reside in the subtly lower middle class area of Ashton...
My MUM used to go to the Bierkellar...and she's approaching her mid-40's...apparently they have been sticky for over 30 years...yuck..I went there when I was 14...if I go out anywhere, it's usually the Mandrake...at least I can pull there!!!
Oh...and by the way...I absolutely ABHOR pop-metal. Nickleback, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Creed...all deserve burning at the stake...*we don't need no water let the mutherf****r burn!*

Weeeeeeeeeeel
Are you going to see Fugazi/Ako at the Bristol Academy?
Thats soon i think.
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 24, 2002
If I had enough money, I'd be going to quite a few gigs...especially Fugazi. As it happens I don't. I've been waiting to see Alec Empire nearly all year, so I'm travelling up to Manchester a week Friday to see him on Oct 5th at the Hop and Grape. There's a nice warm bed waiting for me up there too, so I'm fairly excited about that. I'm gonna try to get to the Sheep on Drugs/Narcissus Pool gig on Oct 20th, cos I've heard so much about N.P, I fancy checking them out. After that, I am skint!
Are you?
Pfft.
BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 24, 2002
Well, I should be. If I can get my arse into gear and get a ticket.
I've got no excuses anymore, now that im 'free and single' (sob!).
Money aint so much of a problem, as long as i dont smoke it all away this job pays quite well.
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 24, 2002
Free and single?
You get discarded then?
There aren't really many good gigs coming up to think of it. Not that I know of anyway - besides Fugazi, Mushroomhead and Sheep on Drugs/Narcissus Pool...
Pfft.
BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 24, 2002
Hmm, discarded... Well, I suppose so. She managed to make me split up with her for a sort of break, then she got all complicated. If you want to read about what exactly happened read here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F19585?thread=210679 Not sure if i recommend it though. Unless you want to wade through pages of me feeling sorry for myself. I dunno, I think in about a month or even less I'll be glad. I had such a good time on Saturday night at the gig and then s****y Cooler not giving a f**k about anyone and doing whatever the f**k I felt like. Id forgotten what a party animal I was, 2 1/2 years had made me calm down around her. She didnt like loudness, and Im about as loud as gets. But anyway, I had a mad night, and I cant wait to go out this weekend. And you dont want to hear about problems im getting over anyway. hmm, I hope someones got a gig soon. I thought that when they opened Bristol Academy we'd get more good bands then we have done.
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 24, 2002
No need to say anymore. I understand the woes of broken up relationships. I officially apologise for my complicated gender too But you sound as if you're doing fine. Alcohol and loud music are a great healer. I'm in the middle of my own little hopeless crisis myself but I don't think it's too serious yet!
I didn't really consider the Academy as a decent venue. The Fleece is my favorite place, the Anson Rooms are a good second, and anything else is put up with if a decent band is playing.
I'm really slack with my local music knowledge though...*grins*...I only know about the Sheep on Drugs/narcissus Pool gig because I caught sight of it on a flyer.
We'll have to be info trading buddies!!
Something about the Bristol Alti. scene that amazes me is that this city is SO small...yet when I go out, I never see anyone I know that I like...or even just faces from gig crowds...but somehow I always see the people who made me schooldays hell...strangely enough they always look like they've crawled out of the gutter too...
Pfft.
BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 25, 2002
Hmmm, the number of bands I know has decreased sharply. 2 1/2 yrs ago I used to go to gigs once a week/at least once a fortnight. Recently, I havent been to many, only friends bands.
And I've never been to Bristol Academy, apparently they are starting a night in October with one room Hardcore and Metal, one room Funk, and one room Hip-Hop. Bit for everybody that one.
Can you remember exactly when the Fugazi gig is?
As for never seeing anyone in Bristol, I always do. Im quite lucky in that I come from Knowle. It seems like half the alt life in Bristol is centralised there sometimes. That gave me an excellent base to build contacts on when I started going out. Now I will mostly always see someone and generally see faces.
But thats probably knowing the nodal points of a community...
People gather in groups around nodes, I know lots of 'nodes' and so have built up lots of friends.
Does that make me a 'mega-node'?
I dont think so.
I dont think so.
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 25, 2002
Oh WOW. I would go just for the Funk and Hip Hop! If that does happen, and the door price is below £4 I might end up being a regular.
I think that does make you a *mega-node*...I expect you'll be receiving a specially constructed hat through the mail sometime soon.
Myself and my friends are way too anti-social. We are all skint, swap the occasional email and birthday pressies and meet up on New Years. Otherwise, we are too busy chasing the male species to hang out too much. Which I suppose makes us true alti people...but I'm not averse to the occasional wiggle on the dance floor.
Have you ever heard of/been to Jilly's in Manchester? I'm up there for the weekend from the 4th of Oct to the 7th. Apparently it's an ACE place...and is open until 7am. We really need a place like that here. I reckon I should just go and open myself a club. Buy one of those buildings in Ashton Court and open it non stop for the weekend.
One can dream.
Pfft.
BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 25, 2002
You really should have gone to the gig on Saturday by First Degree Burns.
Heavy as f**k funky hip-hop, would be one way of describing them.
All mates of mine I admit, but they are f**king good. They aren't gigging again for a bit cos' Sam is going off to Uni so will only be around at weekends. But they should be recording a disc soon.
Hmm, i see friends most nights, every night recently, cos I cant bear to sit at home alone. 2 1/2 years without a second to myself, now half an hour in my room alone seems an eternity.
But it is having a few different groups of friends. I can pick and mix my nights out as they happen. I'll usually go out to the pub with some friends, and depending on who I see depends on what I do that night. Now I've got all this time im hoping to see loads of friends I've lost track of over time and go and stay with mates at their respective Uni's.
I havent ever heard of Jilly's, but then I never venture up north. Furthest I've been for a gig northerly is Brimingham. Thats a point. It is impossible to find a Brummie metaller who doesn't like Sabbath!!!
What pub do you frequent the most?
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Sep 25, 2002
Aha! Just remembered a few other gigs I would go to if I wasnt skint. One Minute Silence are playing, as are Pitchshifter. Raging Speedhorn are a band I've been meaning to catch for ages, but still havent. I'm suspicious of them though. They wear denim jackets.
You are making me feel majorly anti-social now. I have no local. Well thats really only because I'm short of employment which if I had I would be p*ssing it up against the wall in alcohol, anime, books and CD's. I'm also only JUST legally of age to drink. The White Hart is a pretty good place, as is the Eclipse. The only qualms I have is that they get pretty packed around 9pm. But as I've said. I AM ANTI SOCIAL!!!!! I like to be left to my own devices most of the time.
And funky hip hop is only good because it's hilarious. If the Academy does do a night, I am going to sit in the hip hop room with the immortal line *oh that's just TOO hip hop for me* on my lips. Too funny. I do anything to annoy people...I'm considering getting a swastika and the words WHITE POWER tattooed on my arm, just to see what happens when I walk into a Hardcore gig. I'm the last person to be racist, but some individuals really need to develop a sense of humour...
Pfft.
BobTheFarmer Posted Sep 25, 2002
Pitchshifter aren't that good, I saw that them at the Anson rooms last time they came around. When are OMS and Raging Speedhorn playing and where?
I have lived in the White Hart most Friday nights for about 2 years now. But dont go there anymore, have you seen the redecorations!!! urghh, Pastille trendy bar colours. The Prince of Thieves is the next pub up from The Woite Fart and is cheaper than there even with a yellow card. I might go there as three of the bar staff are mates of mine, but it is good, a little small, but it has a late license until 1.
And FDB have a large following in the metal bands of Bristol because they used to be a punk band called Anal Danger, they got a DJ and another MC(The other one was the punk singer, now an MC too) and still kept getting billed on punk/metal nights so they changed their name. And even the name has a history though Im not gonna get into it.
The reason hardcore fans are so anti rascism is because of the Oi scene I believe. Skinheads and Oi and Hardcore have blurred in the past, and I think that is why hardcore fans try to distance themselves as much as possible from rascism.
I get your point though. I am half chinese and so can give a neutral viewpoint on the whole thing and the whole issue is taken too far. I can take the p**s out of my fat mate, my ginger mate and my mate with big ears, but I cant sing Baa Baa Black Sheep in case I offend a black person.
At the end of the day, out of derogoratory terms used for other races, N****r is a derivation of Negro which means black(and the gangster rappers uses it continually), P**i is short for Pakistani.
The only actually offensive title is Chink. Because it refers to the eyes. But do you ever hear the chinese complaining about rascism?
Pfft.
Saturnine Posted Oct 9, 2002
HALF-CHINESE!!!! Phwoar. I have a thing for Oriental guys & girls. Spanki-doodle! For the record, I'm not being PC, but I hate the word *chink*...as well as *half-caste*...I'm as white as white can be though *great big mock sigh* Celtic & East European in me somewhere.
Sorry I haven't stuck a message up for a while. Was gearing up for my trip to Manchester...ended up being kicked out on Sunday night after a weekend of pure abuse. I'm suprised I wasn't beaten and raped to be honest. Managed to blag my way the 300 miles or so back to Bristol on the trains, and I'm not too bruised, so I guess I'm Ok. Still a little shell-shocked though, so you'll haave to excuse the short message.
So me a favour though. Start a new thread on my personal space? I'm on the Telewest system, and the memory cuts out at a certain point! Cheers! I'm just going to write about the EXCELLENT experience I had at the Alec Empire gig, so check out my journal too...
