Well as entries go this is a goodun and certainly a challenge for one of my first editingssmiley - winkeye...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/A832385

Grammar and Spelling were fine although when you copied and pasted your entry the ' - " etc went in "What’s" form. so will go through and sort that (I get round this when C&P'ing but putting it into a text file first.

few thinsg
1)unspoonerised ?
inter alia ?
bon-viveurs ?
lumpenproletariat ?

these confused me and if they confuse me it's likely they'll confuse others, could you clue me in on what they mean?smiley - biggrin

2)Your list would it be an idea to use a numbered list rather than No. 1 etc?

That's all I can think of to ask right now, but once I've sorted them and you've had a think I'll have another think.

thanks

EmXX

Hey Em.

Sorry to have been so slow to respond.

1. A spoonerism is best describer here A150535. So it's actually a bit rude.

2. inter alia means among other things. Latin, but used infrequently in english, notably in legalese.

3. bon-viveurs. they are those that live the high life. French but acceptable in english.

4. lumpenproletariat. This is probably not the best word here. I was trying to convey the feeling of riff-raff, the general public wanna-bes who aspire to associate themselves with the blue-bloods at the pinnacle of the english social ladder.

Feel free to do what you have to do to better it. I am but your humble vassal.

"Mine is not to reason why ..."

And thanks for the kisses - they were kisses weren't they?

PS - Clarification

"inter alia" means "among other things". If I use inter alia in my daily routine, I italicise it. You may be more comfortable with "among other things", and I respect that.

Don't worry about response time, I'm just glad to hear you're okay with me altering a few things, because it's an extremely well structured entrysmiley - smiley and I haven't tried Pimms in a long time (I'm only 17 but distinctly remember being allowed to drink it a few years back)

1)Spoonerism, it may be worth linking to the other entry, just in case people are confused about it.

2) "inter alia" I think that "among other things" is probably better, I know there are a lot of researchers who know latin, but a lot of researchers don't (I don't and I think it's a shame more schools aren't teaching it)

3) that's cool with me, I think I've heard that before so that isn't a problem.

4) I'll have to have a think about an alternative, "lumpenproletariat" is a bit of a mouthful and not a word I've heard very often (I don't think) anyway, it may be an idea to tone it down and easier to read. Whne I read it through I personally kept coming back to it and thinking "smiley - erm"

I'll go change those bits and then se how it readsmiley - smiley

Em

Good work.

1. On Spoonerism, the link to the other entry won't work because it's not an Edited Entry. Perhaps the joke is too elaborate and too rude.

2. Agreed on inter alia.

3. I'm glad you'll keep bon viveur.

4. Try 'hobbledehoi' (sorry no dictionary at hand).

So, everything fine and dandy thus far. I don't know if this means you are doing a good job or aren't being strict enough! (joke)

smiley - laugh don't worry, I'm being strict but I don't want to loose the "zing" the Scout picked up on the first place, I mean if your entry wasn't up to scratch, I wouldn't be here editing it.

It's very well structured, just odd little things which another Sub-ed has agreed with me on...I asked a couple of people to give me a shove in the right direction as I'm very nervous about these first two entries, but they're both shaping up well I thinksmiley - smiley

Now:

1)I'm not sure what to do with unspoonerism, I'm just slightly worried that it would be a little obscuresmiley - erm

2) smiley - cool

3) smiley - ok

4) I'll check the spellingsmiley - winkeye

I'll probably get another sub-ed to check it over once before I submit it properly, just to make sure I've covered everythingsmiley - winkeye

Oh I like the praise.

Bask bask bask. Blush.

I agree with you on the unspoonerism - I think that it is so far removed from non-standard that it would only be acceptable in the alternative guide. (To be honest, I'm surprised it didn't raise even a whimper of protest in PR!).

So in order to rectify it, we can remove "disappointingly unspoonerised punts on the Cam" and replace it with something as nobbishly English, but less obscure.

Let's mull for a day or so?

Ems

Is this the sort of thing you're looking for, or does the whole para need to be rewritten?

Pimm's is a stalwart of the English summer. Accompanying crumpled Panamanian Titfers, bacon-and-egg ties and languid afternoon rounds of croquet, this cloying mahogany coloured liqueur is regularly the man of the match in cricket matches and single-handedly props up the beer-tent at Wimbledon. Without Pimm's, Henley would be no more than an old-timers, amateur boat-show.

Best Regards,

Mont

That makes a lot more sense to me, I loved the unspoonerism bit but it just wasn't meshing well with the rest of the entrysmiley - smiley

You're greased lightning today!

Glad you think it's better. I imagine the 'unspoonerism' was more Alternative Guide than the real McCoy.

it's just I don't think many people would know what it's referring to and without an edited link, it just would have confused people.
