the fabulous world of 'true' vision

On Monday I went to the optician and now finally hacve contact lenses smiley - smiley I am very pleased about this as I have wanted them for years but (i) thought they were ultra expensive, and (2) I hate to wear my glasses all day so would not. smiley - sadface
Anyhow, at the minute my whole world is amazing! With more 'normal' vision the world is so much more intricate and amazing, I can see all the details in a tree, a city skyline (unfortunately rarely get into the countryside), a garden. I can read car number plates, menus (on boards) at restaurants and pubs, I can actually see peoples faces at a distance. No longer will I happily wave to someone in the street...then when they pass me realise that in fact it is a complete stranger.
Thank f**k for contact lenses smiley - smiley

weather

It is Jan 27th 2002, currently 18:15 in Montréal, and the weather is VERY unusual for this time of year (or so I've been told).
It is sunny, and there is NO snow....many people have told me that at this time of year there is usually at least a foot of snow and the temperature is about -20 Centigrade.
Right now it is probably about -5...

What is going on?

This being my first winter here, I also often ask myself another question: Am I glad that it is not a usual winter here (cos I would be freezing), or am I disappointed that I am not experiencing the famously harsh 'real' winter here?

Haven't yet decided on the answer...though I'd like it if there was more snow..

words

they interest me very much, yet at the same time frustrate me considerably. I like to find some agreement with the semioticians and those who believe that as words are human constructions, they create boundaries for us, set us limitations.
Personally, I seem to be constantly searching for the 'right' word to use in any given situation - writing an essay or thesis, having an in-depth conversation, trying to describe my emotions or thoughts. This mainly comes from the fact that words have SO many different possible connotations.
I often think that it would be far easier to find a new form of communication, one that doesn't rely so much on words, and concentrates instead on things within the eyes or body language. But then this would be equally problematic due to the interpretational differences between people.
