It's every singers dream-cum-nightmare. You're singing in a production of something (in this case Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise), and the soprano soloist calls in sick at seven fifteen the night before. Can I fill in her place?

I'm going to be the 'professional' soloist, up there with all the professionals! In a dress (which I don't really have)! And I don't have to sing all the choruses (one of which I don't know!).

I don't know whether to be proud, excited, or scared. A healthy dose of each, I guess.

Potentially, yes. Although having more than a day to prepare would be good too! If the opportunities come up, then I'll take them. I just don't know how to advertise myself though. Bit of a niche market and I have a bit of a niche voice too. I don't have much vibrato and it's not that powerful which might limit the repertoire I can do. And I can't sing Messiah which halves the market too, of course.

But yes, if I can, I will.

How did it go then?

It went better then I could have hoped. I sang out of my skin, and, interestingly, I've been singing better ever since. Perhaps it affected by subconscious somehow!
