If you want to join the 42-ers, then the following equation might work...

(-1 + 8) times (7 - 6 + 0 + 5) = 42

Don't mind intrusions smiley - smiley

I don't really understand how to reply on this technology so that you can see what you are replying to on the screen at the same time. So finding it difficult to refer to your formula.

Is the idea that you use all the numbers in your user number to make 42? Are there any rules you have to follow?

I got the following (5x8) + (7+1)-6 - 0
(40 + 8)-6 - 0
48 - 6
42 - 0 = 42

Would that count? Are you supposed to tell someone? Do you get a prize? smiley - biggrin Just previewed the message and find that the 8s are coming up as smileys because they are next to a bracket. That should read:

( 5 x 8 ) + ( 7 + 1 ) - 6 - 0
(40 + 8 ) - 6 - 0
48 - 6 - 0
42 - 0 = 42

Noticed smileys in your formula too will go back and look to see if I can make sense of it now.

You're well ahead of me, because I don't understand smileys.

Wander over to the Myth of 42 at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A530560. There are no prizes that I know of, but some strange and occasionally interesting maths.

Hi

Having visited the 42 site I find that you didn't tell me that the numbers had to remain in order so I shall have to go away and think some more or humbly accept your answer smiley - smiley
