Hello Also Ran

I thought I'd just reply to you over here so as not to interfere with any logic conversations. It seems then that a tautology does mean a circular argument in normal usage, but means a statement that is always true when it's used by mathematicians and logicians. Nothing's ever simple, is it?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing Have I Got News For You this evening. I have always loved this show. I don't watch the TV much. During the day when the children are around, it's solid Disney Channel. In the evening I'm glad to switch the TV off and enjoy a bit of silence.

I will admit to an addiction to Big Brother, but other than that, Have I Got News For You is one of the few things that I go out of my way to watch. Like you, I don't understand why the BBC feels Angus has to leave. Apparently he's still employed by the BBC and can still work on other shows. It's just that this one is special, being satirical and about current affairs. They say that the recent press coverage about his private life makes his position untenable. I don't see the papers often, and all I know about it is what I've gleaned from Paul and Ian on HIGNFY itself.

I understand that it makes it a bit difficult for Angus. It undermines his ability to have a go at other people. On the other hand, the jibes of Paul and Ian at his expense were a bonus to the show. It was still always funny. I thought Angus was very brave to appear on the show after the first lot of allegations, but it was good entertainment. The thing is, eventually it would have blown over and been forgotten.

As you have said, it won't be the same again. I understand Anne Robinson is in the chair tonight. Well, we'll see. smiley - erm

As long as Christine Hamilton doesn't get the job. I'm afraid I really can't bear that woman.smiley - sadface

I'm sorry to read that you're not in the best of health. It seems you have a very busy life nevertheless. In fact you seem to be busy both in real life and here on h2g2. Hope you enjoy the show tonight, even without Angus.

Oh Cleo smiley - sadface

No I did not enjoy it. I nearly did not switch it on when you told me that it was going to be Anne Robinson. Because I do not particularly like her style.

And the guests were unbelievable. And on the same night I realised that my favourite gardener Alan Titchmarsh has gone to pastures new. what are they up to changing all the old favourites. But I must be in the minority as no-one else seems to complain. I just have a very bizarre sense of humour I think.

We went for a lovely drive this afternoon around the hills. the road was really isolated and yet we were within easy reach of the Thames Railway line. I must away to Mass.

Affectionately,

No. It wasn't so good, was it?
Never mind. There are a couple of consolations to this. First, I don't think we'll be seeing her again. Secondly, the fact that she was unable to be as funny as Angus, either in ready wit or in delivering autocue lines, emphasises how good he was at his job.

The show requires some teamwork from the three permanent members. They're going to have to find someone that both Ian and Paul like and respect. That narrows it down considerably.

I don't know who's planned for the next show. I just hope that eventually we'll be able to enjoy it as we used to.

Last night they had that lass Lisa Tarbuck on. I just looked at it and wondered what I was doing wasting my time. What did go wrong with the show? I cannot believe that it was because of his private life. Thank goodness there is still Parkinson and he has had some interesting guests. Kind regards. AR1 smiley - schooloffish

Dear Cleo

Did you see Angus on the comedy awards last night? I thought that he spoke so well and was really cynically amusing - as he always is. It is a real loss he not being on the show any more. But he paid a nice tribute to Paul.

I think I have just forgotten to post my note to you. Did you see angus on the Comedy Awards show last night? He was really amusing and spoke very nicely about Paul Merton. What a loss to the show, and he has been so dignified and not said anything. Kind regards. AR1 <schooloffish?

Hi Ar,

No, I didn't see it. I wish I had.

I think, at the end of it all, Angus will come out of this rather well.

He has a lot of sympathy and support now. I do understand the BBCs reasons for taking him off the show, although I still feel they over-reacted, but it wasn't a decision that was popular with the audience. Since then, Angus is no longer famous for the tabloid scandals. He's famous for being sacked from HIGNFY. The failure to find a competent replacement for him demonstrates what a good job he was doing, even though he was much taken for granted while he was actually doing it. He's been dignified about the situation, which does him more credit. He's really in a pretty good position.

Hopefully the show won't come off too badly in the end. The recent guest presenter thing has probably livened things up a bit, and generated more interest. The last I heard is that in the next series, Clive Anderson will be the full time host, which probably won't be too bad. After that, I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw Angus come back. I certainly hope so anyway.

We'll just have to wait and see.smiley - smiley

Hope you are right my dear. Gosh it really is quite scary what the newspapers can do. I do not read any now as I really cannot handle all the unkindess.
I am not so sure about Clive but we shall see.

Hi Cleo,

Just thoughtb I would check and see if you still bother to watch HIGNFY.

Still no successor found. I saaw a short programme the other day in which angus featured. He is still far and away the best presenter to me. I love his dry wit.
But I loved the interviews last night with Parkinson Did you see them. Emma Hamilton, Michael Palin, Rod Stewart whom I thought was supberb - and I particularly loiked the songs he sang, and also Pavarotti!!.

Hope you are keeping well.

Oops, sorry, I didn't see you down here. I'm not around as often as I used to be, but somehow I still seem to be subscribed to a lot of active conversations, and this must have slipped down the list without me noticing.

I didn't see HIGNFY this week, but I saw the others. I still enjoy it, but I think I'll be glad when they settle on a regular presenter (depending on who that is). I heard a rumour that they're going to offer the job to Alexander Armstrong. I don't remember much about his last performance.

I haven't seen Angus on TV for a long time, and I missed the Parkinson show. I don't watch TV much. HIGNFY and the occasional film, and I've been trying to catch The Big Read, but I usually miss it.

Anyway, I hope thigs are well with you, and apologies again for the late reply.

Hi Cleo,

Last week there was someone whom I had never seen before. He was actually very very good I thought. Mostly because he looked totally bewildered but in complete control!!. I wonder if you can work that out!!.

I wish I could remember his name. But he tied both Ian and Paul up in knots and in the most casual fashion stood no nonsense from either of them!!. Very good I thought.

Regards
