Ever read Cannery Row by John Steinbeck? It has that same kind of feel to it. And when you say Molesworth, do you mean, like, peason molesworth 2 fotherington thomas lat. hist. algy. geog. and the mrs joyful prize for rafia work?

.........and 3 trillion boos to tchkovsky. Yes indeed I do. Haven't read "Cannery Row" - the only thing I have read by JS is "Travels with Charley", which comes heartily recommended. And definitely facing West. Sit on them ol' ropes and watch it go.
