Hi
It looks like no-one has welcomed you to h2g2 yet. We are usually a happy and friendly community, and someone normally stops by to welcome new users, and provide some useful links and things.
I read the Salon.com link before it was removed, (and found it inspiring and saddening at the same time - thank you for posting it).
But you should know that the BBC does not alow external links in the coversations. (I know, I know, and I agree completely, but that is another story for another day).
The beeb DOES allow external links in guide entries (ie new pages) including your personal space / home page, so you may like to repost it there. And you can put bbc links in the threads.
If I can help at all, simply press the reply button, or mosey on down to my personal space.

Hello!
It's good to hear from you. =)<--- (I'm still not sure how to make the cool little h2g2 smiley faces and other graphics.) I reposted with a text version of the article, I hope that's acceptable to the site.
Anyway, I'm very happy to have h2g2 here to post my thoughts and feelings at the moment. Most American bulletin boards are fairly unreceptive to anti-war conversation.
FYI: I noticed you referred to me as a male, but I'm a broad. That's neither here nor there. Peace and safety to you and yours.

And being a gal called Ben I am usually fairly careful about gender...!
Smileys are easy. The one I just posted is < doh > without the spaces. If you hold your cursor over any one smiley the code for it appears as the last word in the link which shows at the bottom left of your Explorer window (if you are using IE of course). If you click on one of them in a post it will take you to a whole page of the little critters.
The BBC is hypersensitive to copyright. So they may well take the full text down. If you want to put a link in a post just type it in (though it must be a bbc link). If you want to put a link on your page, again, you can just type it. If you use guideML the format is

Welcome to hootoo. Have some cake.

Hi I'm one of the welcoming people on the site we're called ACES (doesn't that sound great) but it really means assistant community editors (which sounds all formal and not so cool).
My name is Sally and I'm here to say hello and to help out if you have any problems.
This is a page with a few helpful links, so that I don't have to write them out lots of times (included is the smiley page)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A565003
If you have any problems just reply to this message and I'll see if I can help, or at least find someone who can.
Everyone is a bit sad with the happenings in America. By the sound of it you seem to be a person who believes in a balanced outlook on the situation and won't start inflammitory postings that are inappropriate at the moment. Some people are still quite emotional, so stop and think before posting so you don't upset or anger anyone. If something upsets or angers you let me or one of the "official" people know.
I know it sounds serious, but we're not like that really I hope you meet lots of great people (and I'm generally around for a chat every now and again if you want).
Enjoy and have fun.
SallyM
P.S. Your salon link is working again

Thanks for the warm welcome.
I'll be a more productive member of h2g2 when I can think of something other than recent events for more than 2 minutes.
Peace and Safety to You and Yours
