Welcome to h2g2 - hmmm ... ever so slightly askew ... yes, I think that describes this place really well
My name is Feisor and I am an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) here at h2g2.
We ACEs are here to assist new researchers so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
You can leave a message on my space just by clicking on my name at the top of this message or by hitting the reply button button below - it won't hit back (usually).
The "Italics" (they are the people who run this place - so-called because their names are displayed in bold italics - God Bless 'Em) have left a message for newcomers at

Feisor, hi! Thanks for the welcome, I've already hit h2g2 more than any other community site! Finding like minded hikers finally justifies me buying this p.c., (that and the free 'phone I got with it!). i hope it is adictive, 'cos around here when you pluck up the bottle to actually tell anyone yor interests include conservation, sci-fi, the www and disbelieving anyone who actually wants 'power', they get this glazed Homer Simpson look on their face and start talking about how they knew someone once who liked "that sort of thing, but whatever became of them"? So, here's to "interesting times" as a favourite author might say!
Thanks,
Motiak,
L.L.A.F.

Feisor, a zillion apologies for not responding earlier. But I have a Q.
1.If i want to post a new conversation topic in say "Ask the h2g2 community", how do I do it?
2. How do I post to another resercher 'directly' through h2g2?
3. What difference does it make if I post a reply to the original posting in a conversation or one of the later postings/replies to it?
Regards,
Motiak

Happy to help.
If you want to start a new thread (or conversation) at Ask H2G2 (or anywhere for that matter) go to the main or opening page where you will see a list of current threads - there is a button above the list called "Discuss This Entry" - hit it - you will than be asked for a Subject and you continue from there.
When you are already in a conversation hit the reply button on the LAST entry - because your reply will ALWAYS be posted at the END of the thread - while this is not important all the time, it is if you are participating in one of the many "game" threads around. I have found that (for example) if you are replying to post 2 (say) of a 200 post thread it is better to add "replying to post 2" at the start of the message so people don't think that you are replying to post 200. While you are in a conversation you can check which post is being replied to by hitting the "This is a reply to this Posting" at the top of the message.
A few more hints ... in your converstaion list on your page if you hit the name of the conversation it will take you to the START of the thread - if you click on "posted" it will take you to YOUR last post - if you click on "last reply" it will take you to (surprise, surprise) to the LAST posting in the thread.
This is handy because if you want to check on backlog you can continue from the last time you posted - that's why you will see people "bookmarking" a thread with a smiley or something.
Hope all this helps

Oops - missed Q.2
To post directly to a researcher - click on their name which will take you to their user space - at the bottom of the page is a "Discuss this entry" button - hit this and add a new thread.
PS Hope that this is all clear - let me know if I have just confused you further
