Food for new mums

Hi kelli,
I remember you mentioning the idea of getting new mums some of those foodstuffs that they can't eat while pregnant. A couple who are close friends have just had a boy (and have asked me to be godfather, which is cool and wonderful and a scary responsibility all at once). I'd like to take some tasty treats with me when I visit. I know a nice bottle of wine is high on the list, and probably blue cheese (but how do I know what's pasteurised and what's not? guess I need to scrutinise the labels), but I can't remember what other ideas you mentioned. What would you suggest?
David

What lovely news, congrats on your new godson
Depends on what the friend has been avoiding - people make their own decisions about degrees of risk. I usually do a bottle of wine or preferred booze, a variety of mould-ripened cheeses (any blue cheese, brie-type stuff, goats' cheese - these all have listeria risk and pretty much everyone avoids them), paté (can't eat liver while preggers), jar of peanut butter, prawns/shellfish. Flapjacks are good to take if she is breastfeeding as anything with oats in is good for milk production. Or anything that can be microwaved and then eaten with just a fork over the head of the feeding baby
You'll be a great godfather

I spoke to them last night (and heard the little one cry), and it sounds like daddy is doing lots of cooking at the moment, though largely fdrom massive stockpiles in the freezer! I'll take a variety of things - they both like food. And I'll do home-made flapjacks. I'd never have known about oats - thank you!
