Hola ...
Ek* this space intentionally left blank *ki Started conversation Jul 5, 2001
Hey there, By Day ... hope you don't mind me calling you that ... somewhat easier than the whole shebang!
So yes, here I am. Here as official representative of the ACEs (Assistant Community Editors), reaching the parts other beers don't reach in a low-calorie, caffeine free way. We're here to oil the joints and hold your hand in your formative days as a researcher. Should you get in a pickle, jam or light marinade, raise a paw and one of us will come a-bounding, a list of us can be reached from my homepage and we're all equally willing and able so if you get lost, blow the whistle on your life vest to attract attention.
To get the most from this, the magnum opus of our time, it's pretty much trial and error. Go for a wander, see what people are up to and join in as and when you so feel like it.
As I said, if you do get lost or want to get lost, there's always someone a click or two away. By replying to this, you can let me know what's eatin' ya', if anything, or just for a some light banter - promise I won't bite .
The main thing is to enjoy and we'll see you around.
Ekki

Hello! LeKZ told me to come here and say hello. How are things? If you wanna talk, please do!
Hola ...
David Conway Posted Jul 5, 2001
Hi there Ekki.
I'll let you get away with just calling me By day if it lets me avoid using your entire screen name.
Thanks for the welcome.
I do plan on looking around and then maybe actually contributing something useful, informative or...
neither of those, but fun.
If I every feel like I', up to my nose hairs in pea soup or any other substance, I'll give a yell.
Thanks again.

David Conway Posted Jul 5, 2001
Pillowcase!!!
Thanks for the welcome. You've been doing LOTS to help me already, by being as supportive to LeKZ as humanly, or perhaps even inhumanly, possible.
Everything you've done, everything you've said publically and everything you've said privately is very much appreciated by LeKZ and by me.
I'm hoping to have a good time here once the controversy has died down. It WILL settle down here again. I have so decreed. Not that anyone has every listened to anything I've decreed before. Worth trying, though...
If I feel like we need to talk, which COULD HAPPEN, I won't hesitate to give a yell.

Willem Posted Jul 5, 2001
I am so happy to hear that what I'm doing is helping! Please tell me if you think there's more I can do, either for LeKZ, or for you!
Don't doubt the power of well-meant decrees!
And if you want to talk about nicer things than this nasty bizness, which I suspect you will indeed want from time to time, I will be delighted to oblige you!
Hola ...
David Conway Posted Jul 6, 2001
Actually, Pillowcase, I think I AM going to give a shot at producing a "Multiple Personality Primer," or something along those lines. That should keep me fairly busy for a while (but NOT so busy that I forget to enjoy myself too!).
The trick is gong to be keeping the thing informative without ending up with something the length of the entire edited guide to date.
I'm not a very wordy person, but it's a kinda big topic.
Conversations about nicer things are always welcome, as are well-meant decrees.
I have so decreed.

It is hereby decreed that this decree be decreed ...
d'you agree?
see y'around By Day, and of course it's fine to just call me Ekki. Very few people are fool hardy enough to go for the whole thing - it gets a bit messy after a while!

Just "Hi"

By Day, do you know about the entries already written on M.P.? Colonel Sellers, Lucinda and Inanna have all also been doing stuff along that line and you might want to look at it. You can find all this stuff in the '90% of the brain' and other fora on Fenny Reh Craeser's userpage. Fenny did a lot of stuff that you will probably find very helpful!
Hola ...
Willem Posted Jul 6, 2001
Sorry, it would actually be on Fenny's *other* userpage, here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U177893 Specifically, look at 'Precognitors threads': http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A586334 I think there ought to be some stuff there, but it now appears to me that you'll find more here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F55016?thread=124632&latest=1

Hi 'by day' - assuming I should call you that rather than anything else - nice to see you here on h2g2. I hope you'll find your stay here pleasant, enjoyable, refreshing, and utterly unlike a night in a cheap hotel.
I hope 'fun' is more fun for you, in any case. Best of luck!

Thanks Pillowcase! It's nice to know my userspace gets an occasional visitor! Feel free to drop in, By Day (no less welcome by night!)
And finally, an un-related question: If, by day, you are a mild-mannered Government Bureaucrat, what do you turn into after dark?

Hola ...
David Conway Posted Jul 7, 2001
Pillowcase,
Thanks for the heads up. I will absolutely take a look. I'd hate to cover well worn ground with my own variety of fertilizer. I've been in deep fertilizer before and will be again, but don't need to add to the pile, not to mention spending days of my time re-inventing the multiple spoked wheel.
Lucinda,
"By Day" works for me fine. So does "Mild Mannered." So does "Government Bureaucrat" or just "Bureaucrat" So does "Hey, Fertilizer-Head!" I don't care what you call me, as long as you call me.
BTW, what do you have against cheap hotels. Some of the more interesting times of my life were spent in cheap hotels. The room in Cuidad Juarez, which cost exactly two dollars American and had a hole in the door that once contained a doorknob comes to mind.
So does "The Locker Club," in Long Beach, California. At this upscale establishment, for one dollar, you could sleep on any piece of furniture or floor you could find in a largish room furnished mostly with old church pews just the right length for two people to stretch out without getting their feet tangled up with those of their pew-mates. For three dollars, you could actually get a bunk, with an alleged mattress in a different room.
Did I mention that before filling every childs dream of becoming a government bureaucrat upon reaching adulthood, I did a stretch as a homeless person? I came to know all the best Rescue Missions and Salvation Army stations in the southwestern United States.
Fenny,
I most certainly WILL drop in on you, by day or night. If by night... well, you did ask what I turn into after dark...
Depends on the context, now doesn't it? I AM the amazing transforming bureaucrat! I could turn into just about anything. That mysterious enough?

By Day, how are LeKZ doing if I may ask? I just want to say one thing - my email is not working at the moment, probably as a result of the weather, so I may not have received some of their messages. I also have more that I would like to send, including one for the lil lef sid kidz, but ask them all to be patient until they can get through again.
Hola ...
David Conway Posted Jul 7, 2001
Pillowcase,
LeKZ have been pretty depressed lately. As of this moment (9:09 am, local time), they are still asleep. A good night's sleep comes to them so rarely, I let them sleep until they're done when they can.
I'll be sure to pass along your message about your messages.
They couldn't log on for a while last night, due to problems with their ISP. You'd think that using the local telephone company as your internet service provider would minimize that sort of thing...
but you'd be wrong.

Amy,
Thanks for the welcome.
Colonel Sellers,
Thanks for the bolts. Shouldn't I have some nuts with those?
