Yes, it was indescribable. Terrifying but absolutely thrilling too I think I dreamt about driving for a week afterwards!
(Actually, I tell a lie, it was my second lesson. We did an hour of just getting the hang of the clutch and basic controls in my first lesson.)
I wouldn't worry about going too slow, it's definitely better than going too fast. And if you really want to force yourself to drive safely, go and watch the film "21 Grams".

I think I've actually had that dream myself.
My first lesson probably would've been the same, but I'd already done the basics beforehand.
I think my main problem with speed is on twisty roads, I always get the feeling I'm not going to steer in time, and just go straight onto the kerb into that lampost.
But I have no problem with steering correctly. It's strange. I know I can negotiate bends correctly, but I just think I won't.

I never had this problem when I was learning on my instructor's nice ford focus, but now in my crappy metro I occasionally worry that the car will just flip over when driving down twisty roads at any sort of speed. It's just so light and flimsy, it always amazes me that it stays all four wheels on the ground.

It helps
I had it parked just outside my house the other day and heard some sort of metallic clunking noises, so I had a look out the window and saw some kids rushing off. I rushed down and they'd BENT THE DOOR OPEN! It's so flimsy that it's possibly to bend open the upper half of the door from the outside with your bare hands. It wasn't too big a problem, I just bent it back again, quietly noting to myself not to put anything valuable in it ever.

Well, I'm not too bothered really. I quite like the little metro, even though it is a bit of a toy car.

After a Ford Focus/Escort anything feels like it will fall over on corners, the Fords are well known not only for their nice gear boxes but their 'wheel at each corner' stability.
I still mourn for my E reg Red Ford Escort, it was just such a pleasure to drive. What really annoyed me was that it eventually had to go because the body work was dead and not because the engine needed anything
