new role

1st August, first time here for ages. I'm now managing a project or three in work, or will be when they've been brought into life. This is a New Departure for me, and hence time-consuming but quite fun.

Anyone else see the 'Slow Cities' Italian campaign in beeb news this week ? Set me to wondering whether all this rushing round achieves anything. Its certainly fashionable of course, & as some-one usually trying to fit too many activities into too little time I suppose I should know...
Anyway, unusual couple of days in that I seem to be removing things fom my ToDo list faster than adding them [new toy, Palm Vx, has encouraged rennaissance [sp?] in use of To Do lists, almost certainly a Good Thing and has paid for itself with that alone][except that I forgot to bring it into work, & thus missed 1st opportunity in a week to synchronise it with my PC smiley - sadface ].

Got assessment today from 2 days' advanced mortorcycle training, bit of a blow as it's all 2 ['good'] out of 4, no '1'-s. I trust the guy who did it, and have a nasty feeling that to get 1's I'll either have to become a bike cop [& get paid by Her Majesty to do about 8 weeks' training full time] or Ne Naturally Better to get 1's ; neither is attainable. But we'll keep trying & seek alternative means...

Then off to the Alps to wander [and wonder?] up some hills for next two weeks. Apart from Bad Effect [gear-fest - did I mention I have gear-freak tendencies?], and requirement to Pack [one of my Least-Loved activities] I am looking forward Most Muchly to this, should be challenging, hurt a lot [as not Fit Enough] and Be Wonderful. I'll let you know.

Be Careful out there, and Work Hard at Having Fun - you only get the one shot at it [probably]. TFD.

balance

Bad & good from the last couple of days.
Bad - a stark reminder, when a good friend tried, that resuscitation often doesn't work, even when done right. 'death is a part of life' it says in a well-known film, but that, and the knowledge that some-one did the resus. right, and platitudes about 'people dying doing what they wanted to' don't prevent it being hard. So Hazel, good effort for trying.

And good - a superb weekend in the mountains [after a LONG break]. I can't think of a better excuse for aching muscles I'd forgotten I had ! In a good team, learning new stuff, along with a cracking [if at times mildly drunken] discussion about religion for hours in the evening*. Which reinforces my thought that people offended by trolling should get a life [just my opinion, you understand... smiley - winkeye ]
*but I still dont buy Predestination co-existing with Free Will...

"There have been joys too great to be described in words, and there have been griefs upon which I have not dared to dwell..". maybe it balances in the end.

biking

Monday again, with 380 miles' biking under my belt since 8am Sunday. Superb run yesterday, Bristol, A39 to Lynmouth on the north coast of Exmoor [Devon, England for any far-flung readers], then back across the middle of the moor [B3223-3224]. Lovely weather, not too much traffic. Only two half-hearted attempts to kill me by dopey motorists [anyone know what planet car-drivers inhabit on Sundays ? Surely not ours. Answers on a post-card to...]
And then an easy run up the motorway today. Stafford services North, the coffee bar in the entrance is superb - drop off if you're ever round there [& tell Manay 'regards from the Monday-morning biker']. Motorways are boringly effective, but still better on a bike than in a cage [aka car].
Finalising details for [receiving] 4 days' more advanced motorcycling training in a fortnight, & looking forward lots to that, and also to the end of my 8-month work assignment so I won't be spending 8 hours a week on the motorway - bliss !

got to start somewhere...

Irony is cute. I'd much rather NOT have discovered H2G2 due to Douglas' death, but that's the way it goes. 'Death is a part of Life' sez Forrest gump. On a more positive note [sort of], read 'Last Chance to See' if you haven't already, it's great.
Quite interesting to see the debate here about BBC censorship from pre-BBC-ites. Guess the beeb is a pretty secure home, and you dont get something for nothing [& lets please remember the people involved are only earning a crust [?maybe], so lets have a go at the POLICY if we don't like it?]

Films - should we be going to see stuff like Pearl Harbour if it's entertaining rubbish ? There seems to be a gulf , especially with this film, between reviewers who say its rubbish & viewers who say its a cracking action movie. It seems hypocritical to accept stuff like Indiana Jones or Star Wars from an ivory tower saying 'well those werent MEANT to be historical'. At leat we Brits can't complain that we've been excluded from it... here endeth today's rambling.
