Hello, Beth - my great-grandparents' family did the same in the 1870s, went from Scotland to Nova Scotia, then went from there to NZ.. Well, that's the maternal half. Interesting, I thought, to see someone doing the same in the 20th or 21st century, depending on when you went.

Hi Della
Thanks for stopping by. You are in New Zealand then?
I know there were quite a few former Scots left here for New Zealand in the 1800s. Some in the early 1800s - there must have been strong ties between the two places back then.
I have been in Nova Scotia for ten years or so. Before that I spent 10 years in Toronto.
I gather you like cats - that's a good thing.

Apparently, Beth, how it went was- there was an attempt to found a Presbyterian colony in Nova Scotia - the very name means New Scotland! It failed(the colony) and while some of those from it returned to Scotland, the rest came here to NZ. Two thirds of NZ's population are descended from Scots people, I gather.
I love cats, and sorry, I do not like dogs.I was monstered by a dog on my way out this morning, and comforted by a lovely cat a few doors along, this very morning!

Della
The story of the Scots who came here and later went to New Zealand is coming back to me now. There was a book written about it here recently - published within the last year or so. Also, it seems to me, that the ship that took them to New Zealand was the same ship that brought them from Scotland in the first place.
In Pictou, Nova Scotia, where those Scots originally landed here, they have built a replica to that ship - the Hector. It was launched last fall. It is still up in Pictou as far as I know.
I'll check it out - give me a week or so.

Sorry for not getting back to you - I haven't managed to track down the information I was looking for.
What I have found is that the group of Scots that I was thinking about, came to Pictou in 1773. Some of them moved on to New Zealand. I cannot find the date but it must have been in the early 1800s at the latest. This would have been much too early to tie in with your folks though.
I'll keep looking and get back to you.
Beth
