However, I'm one of the (very) few internet users who doesn't use smileys. Although I use the internet (the web, e-mail, instant messaging, ...) for many years now, I never have felt the need to stress the way I think with smileys.
I'd like to think that who-ever reads whatever I write is smart enough to know whether I'm serious or not (I am now), to know when I'm making a pun, a joke, ...
Don't let this discourage you to provide other newcomers those links though.

Oh, we don't use the h2g2 smileys only to for the usual expressions like smile, irony, surprise etc, but for fun as well!
We've got smileys for various seasons:

, 
birthday gifts: 
, 
, 
or for amusement: 
DUCK! 
LOOK OUT!
...but that depends on what you want to say, and how...
