First of all welcome to h2g2 - someone will be around shortly to give you the guided tour...
I've just come back from a holiday in Texas/Louisiana and watched several of the episodes of Queer as Folk and would have to agree. The US version is very beautiful to look at and listen to - but then if you scrub hard enough anything will look good. For my liking, it's all too sanitised. The issues that made the series what it was (age of consent, death, platonic gay relationships etc) have been altered beyond repair and made the US version blander than food in the UK.
But it's a start at least.
