Malabarista - now with added pony

Didn't want to clutter up other threads with it.

Just to show off - the town where I'm currently sitting (at my mother's house) produced most of the crossbows for the entire Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages and well into the Renaissance... smiley - biggrin

Really? That's smiley - cool! I'd be really interested if there's any local history or museums that include this aspect.

My next crossbow (hopefully, money permitting!) will be a Belgian target bow. About 250lb bow used to shoot a target on top of a large pole. Has a very large brass ball on the end of the stock and is used over the shoulder with the brass ball counterweighting the prods at the front.

Actually, one thing, and I feel rather forward in asking this, if you happen upon a used book store in germany, or an antiques book store - there is a book I am really after called 'Die Armbrust' (hope I have remembered the title correctly) which is out of print. Not sure when it was produced, but apparently it is one of the best books on the medieval crossbow as the author actually X-rayed authentic bows to work out what the inside mechanism was. Very geeky I know but the Ralph Payne-Galway book (which I have smiley - smiley and is the best english language book on them - including showing how to make one - and how to make a ballista and a trebuchet smiley - evilgrin) was criticised for not being totally accurate for the trigger mechanism.

I'm sorry, that is really smiley - smiley

it would be more reliable I think!

Mind you, I can't complain too much, the addy I sent from is a mates server. He runs a linux box with a forum and website on it for an extended group of friends - quite a few of us on it - and also runs a mail server so we get free email. And I've never had any spam on that email addy (so don;t be send it to any spam servers smiley - winkeye ).

So, you totally swamped by apples now? Used to have the same (although prob not on the scale you have) when I was a kid and I can still remember the smell from the outhouse where we stored them.

smiley - laugh I see. Didn't recognise the domain.

Oh yes, the hallway smells very apple-y! Eight cratefuls left...

I'll have to take some with me when I go, as well as applesauce and dried apple rings.

I can see you now sat outside the uni crying 'Who will buy my loverly apples? Apples, apples as much as you need!' etc etc.

Failing that, wait till they go squishy and brown and use them as ammo for your next re-enactment. Authentic if nothing else smiley - winkeye

heh! Although far more worthy!

OTOH if you keep a few of them I could pop over and practice my William Tell act if/when I get the target bow! I'm perfectly safe you know, no one has ever complained afterwards smiley - biggrin

Mmmmmhmmm - just give me sufficient advance warning to smiley - run!

I once held the torch for an axe thrower who was practicing his craft at night.

He chose a woman from the audience to stand in front of his target. Nothing happened, fortunately.

But we later found out he *had* an assistant, who quit when he hit her in the shoulder - and that he needed glasses, but refused to wear them for being inauthentic! smiley - doh

smiley - laugh True. And then we can de-rail that one smiley - evilgrin

It's one of those threads that always crops up again. Maybe I should start a thread listing threads that always come back, but I'm sure that's been done, too.

Crossbows

Post 17

IctoanAWEWawi

ah but you could then included that thread within itself thereby causing a closed referential loop. By convincing someone to post within the thread we could thereby trap them in there until the end of time. A useful way to deal some of the more unwelcome researchers!

So you just bumbling around at home at the moment then?
No pressing agricultural or home duties to perform?

Malabarista - now with added pony

smiley - evilgrin Now there's a plan. It's as simple as trapping a computer programmer (send him to wash his hair. Lather, rinse, and repeat...)

Yes, just lounging around right now smiley - yawn though I'm about to go take the dog for a walk. I can't apply for any jobs before I get my diploma, it's too wet to work on anything outside, and I need a helper if I'm to finish gutting the old kitchen upstairs, because the things left in there are too big for me to move by myself. The only real project I've currently got going is doing the costumes for my sister's school play.

I should probably finally get drawing again, but somehow, I can't be bothered.

Have you got any other exams coming up, or are you all done for the moment?

Crossbows

Post 19

IctoanAWEWawi

erm, isn't the problem there convincing said programmer to 'wash his hair'?

I'm all done for the moment, just taking a bit of time off and then perhaps deciding on what to do next year! Whether I continue the psychology or look at maybe switching to psychology and philosophy. Dunno yet.

"it's too wet"
"too big for me to move"
What? That doesn't sound like the rufty-tufty warrior lass I know!
You're going soft - back to the student accommodation for you to toughen up!

smiley - laugh Right - that is a bit of a challenge.

Psychology and philosophy? Boy, you like your light reading smiley - winkeye

smiley - blush It's true. I even sleep in a heated bedroom now. And I've not swung a sword in ages.
