Current Affairs

I am not talking about electricity here. Basically I am kinda baffled. Why are we at war, exactly?

OK, I can accept Tony Blair's "moral" argument that Saddam is a ruthless tyrant who murders and tortures his own people, and that he should be removed and democracy installed in his place. No problems there; however, I do wonder where our morals were when our government was building Saddam's chemical weapons plants and supplying him with arms...

I wonder also how some can crow about threats to democracy when they ascended to power on the basis of vote-rigging and a court case.

I wonder how they can also seek to deny weapons of mass destruction to other countries whilst holding an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction larger than the combined arsenals of the rest of the world. Could it be something to do with the fact that WMD are the great "equaliser"? Defend yourself solely with a ramshackle army and you are doomed. Defend yourself with a few long-range missiles armed with nuclear warheads, and the size of your army becomes less significant - you can still potentially destroy American cities. Oops, did I say American?

Of course, apparently American WMD are no threat to the rest of the world. Try telling that to upwards of 5,000 dead civilians in Afghanistan and around 750 so far in Iraq.

Interesting

Apparently we all lead interesting lives. Am I the exception that proves the rule, I find myself wondering?

New Labour

Around 1996, I joined the Labour Party, fancying it was a socialist outfit. "New Labour, New Danger", the Tories said. What they ought to have said, I suppose, is "you might as well vote for us, since New Labour are only going to continue with our policies. At least we are honest about it".

The fact is, "New Labour" is a sham. I know I'm only catching up with the rest of you here. They said they would re-nationalise the railways. They haven't (although they are still pumping YOUR taxes into a "private" industry). The NHS is more strapped for cash than ever. They put 75% tax on petrol. They try and get you out of your car. They not only provide no alternative, they provide no apparent hope of any alternative. House prices are so high that ordinary people on average wages cannot afford homes. And what is the alternative? A tent? The gap between rich and poor continues to grow; and Tony Blair had a few things to say about that in opposition. Now he refuses even to say that it is unacceptable. Privatisations will continue (The London Underground and the NHS will be next). And so, presumably, we will not be needing to pay so much tax, right? But will taxes go down? My arse will they. So where is all the money going? To bribe us to vote Labour at the next election? They are going to try to bribe US with OUR money again? And Tony Blair wonders why people don't vote? Ladies and gentlemen, take your pick. Do want to be governed by the Tories, or the Tories?

Our political system is a sham. I have known this for a while, but the more I investigate, the more obvious it is. I just hope New Labour supporters wake up to that fact as I have. Since there is no viable alternative - DON'T VOTE! I shall not be voting in general elections in future, until such time as a new socialist party emerges.

My Saturday Night

My baby son Michael (six weeks) would not sleep. At 1.11 am, I was about to go downstairs for a reason that escapes me for the moment, when my other son Harry (two and a half) opened his bedroom door. There he stood in vest and nappy holding a tennis racket. "Daddy, will you play tennis with me?" he asked. "Not just at the moment, darling" I replied...

Conspiracies

Some conspiracies undoubtedly happened and are happening. Others are just Taurus Excretia. JFK was shot, no doubt about it, as the result of a conspiracy. George W Bush getting elected was a cock-up, however. Tony Blair getting elected was a result of many people in Britain thinking William Hague is a demented little racist. Not that I would subscribe to such a viewpoint. The removal of Dad's Cookies from the market place may be the result of a conspiracy. Am I currently conspiring to defraud my employer? Perish the thought. I am just skiving.

Undoubtedly politicians are constantly conspiring, as is the capitalist system. They want our money and they want our votes. Not neccessarily in that order. What do they give us in return? Not much. Five years of b*****ks and a CD player that goes wrong after a year, so you have to buy another one. Lung cancer. Food poisoning. CJD. Foot and Mouth. Karaoke. No, maybe not karaoke.

Conspiracy theories. Some of the dafter ones I have heard:-

Humans came from Mars - yep the Sumerians were actually martians.

Reptiles from the lower fourth dimension rule the world - yep, the Queen of England is a shape-shifting reptile child abuser who drinks blood, it has been alleged.

Governments use food additives and vaccines to control us - dangerous idea this - if people stop vaccinating their kids, children WILL die of or be scarred by horrible diseases like measles. Whoever thought this one up didn't think at all. I know who it was.

We never went to the moon - cobblers.

In 2010, the Illuminati will turn Jupiter into a new sun, just like in the Arthur C Clarke novel, "2010 - Oddysey Two" - oh yeah? And just HOW are they going to do THAT, exactly?

If anyone knows of any whackier ones, please let me know.
